The NBA memo, citing FBI intelligence, specifically linked the crimes to “transnational South American Theft Groups” that target “professional athletes and other high-net-worth individuals.” These groups are known for using “advanced techniques” such as pre-surveillance, drones, signal-jamming devices and other cutting-edge technology. The NFL highlighted the risks posed by what it called “organized and skilled groups” of burglars targeting wealthy athletes. While the warnings did not name victims, they were issued after the homes of athletes including Kansas City Chiefs stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce and Milwaukee Bucks forward Bobby Portis were recently burglarized. The S&P 500 pulled 0.5% higher after flipping between gains and losses several times during the day. Banks, smaller companies and other areas of the stock market that tend to do best when the economy is strong helped lead the way, while bitcoin briefly broke above $99,000. Crude oil, meanwhile, continued to rise. The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped 461 points, or 1.1%, and the Nasdaq composite edged up by less than 0.1%. Nvidia rose just 0.5% after beating analysts’ estimates for profit and revenue yet again, but it was still the strongest force pulling the S&P 500 upward. It also gave a forecast for revenue in the current quarter that topped most analysts’ expectations due to voracious demand for its chips used in artificial-intelligence technology. Its stock initially sank in afterhours trading Wednesday following the release of the results. Some investors said the market might have been looking for Nvidia’s revenue forecast to surpass expectations by even more. Many bring power banks to recharge their devices and sometimes a backup phone. “We are not the heroes that people think we are,” Chalub added of his fellow streamers, crediting fans on the ground who do their work pro bono. “The real heroes are the people in the venue spending — or wasting — their time trying to live stream for us instead of enjoying the show.” The legality around live streaming Swift’s concerts is murky. In the simplest terms, the rebroadcasting of copyrighted music without a licence isn’t allowed, and platforms such as YouTube and TikTok have sometimes shut down live feeds mid-stream at the behest of record labels. It happened to Ammir Shar, a 25-year-old streamer from Blackpool, U.K., who saw his YouTube feed for the fourth Toronto concert yanked down while the show was in progress. Hosts say they worry about racking up too many takedown notices, which can risk permanently shutting down their channels. Usually after a live stream ends, they delete the footage from platforms like YouTube. However, they say attempts to silence them won’t amount to much. When one streamer falls, sometimes two others turn up. Copyright owners are still grappling with that perspective, especially when unsanctioned live streams can impact other financial stakes, said Kerr-Wilson. In Swift’s case, she sold the streaming rights to her “The Eras Tour” film to Disney Plus for US$75 million. Arguably, the lawyer suggested, a company might take issue with similar options on the market, such as a live stream. But even that seems to be an evolving conversation. “People have realized that social media and user-generated content isn’t the enemy, and, in fact, can be a powerful way to engage with fans and to be part of the conversation,” he said. “I think the trend is going to continue.” While Swift hasn’t publicly said much about the streams, several streamers believe she is aware of them. They also argue the vast majority of people tuning into their feeds already have an investment in Swift’s success. Last November, a group of technologically savvy Swifties launched Swift Alert, a phone app that sends out alerts for the highlights of each Eras Tour show. Inside the app, the creators also launched a game called Mastermind — named after a Swift song, of course — where fans can win prizes by guessing which of Swift’s rotating selection of outfits she’ll wear for each “era” of her performance. Using Swift Alert in tandem with the live streams, many fans tune in for the standout moments of the three-hour concert. “A lot of people compare it to fantasy football,” Shah said. “This kind of stuff brings us closer together.” With the Eras Tour set to end in Vancouver on Dec. 8, many live streamers say they’re uncertain how the future looks. Recently, Bohne experimented with a live stream from pop singer Meghan Trainor’s concert to see if there’s similar interest. While it was enjoyable, she said the experience wasn’t quite the same. Others have started streaming Sabrina Carpenter’s Short n’ Sweet Tour. They say her shows are closest to Swift’s because Carpenter is a natural at witty banter, performs nightly surprise songs and changes up her outfits. “I’ve considered doing a few other (musicians, but they) are more like normal concerts — the artist on the stage with a microphone in one outfit, just singing their songs,” said Shah. “It’s not something that people at home will be like, ‘What outfit is she going to wear?’” Some wonder how live streaming will look without the intrigue of Swift’s tour. An article in “The Atlantic” entitled “The Growing Gender Divide, Three Minutes At A Time,” spotlighted the work of singer/songwriter Sabrina Carpenter, one of a growing list of female singer/songwriters who have overtaken the “air waves” recently. Of course, to us elders this is nothing new. We saw a giant bloom of female singer/songwriters during the 60s and 70s. Some (but certainly not all) including Janis Ian, Judee Sill, Joni Mitchell, Judy Collins, Laura Nyro and the legendary Carole King. I mentioned some of these artists in a comment and got the response that this was now the younger artists time to shine. Sigh... Every generation should be able to claim some music as its own and likewise some artists. But the hubris of younger people that insist that they “invented” something that a lot of us know has been here for a while..my teeth get on edge. In respect to all of the younger singer/songwriters, none of them would exist without the “confessional works” of Joni Mitchell, Janis Ian and Laura Nyro. Ask any current singer who their influences are and those names will continually pop up because THEY invented the “confessional” genre, along with the now mandatory piece where the artist sits at a white grand piano and soulfully plays a song consisting of four chords and no bridge. What can I say? Songwriting was taken a lot more seriously 60 years ago. And I know how this sounds. An old (white) guy complaining about how the music he grew up with was so much better and how nothing produced now could ever replace it. Well, nothing will. Those memories and the excitement of hearing some of these artists perform for the first time are unique to my generation. Sorry the younger folks missed out. And the newer stuff will take some time to find an emotional place in our hearts. However, there is quality work being produced now. How could there not be? I’ve already rhapsodized about Taylor Swift and Billie Ellish. I was pleased to see that artists like Ms. Carpenter (whose work stands out as both retro and futuristic), Chappell Roan, Olivia Rodrigo and so many others either write or co-write all their tunes. I may have a problem with the specific musical formats they use, but, if it’s a solidly built song, I’m in. What frankly concerns me is the weight an artist’s political stance or how they identify themselves plays in their acceptance by an audience. That wasn’t always the case. In our day, artists were pretty much accepted as who they presented themselves to be. That all changed with David Bowie and Annie Lennox. Their androgynous appearances may have raised fans' eyebrows, but, in the end, it didn’t matter. If you had already connected with an artist based on their artistic expression, you went along for the rest of the ride. Social media has made these concerns almost as important as the music and that’s wrong. All art has to be considered for its own sake and not necessarily the particulars of its creators. After all, bad people often make great art. Nate Jones, writing for “The Vulture,” opined that Chappell Roan got too famous too fast and couldn’t deal with the pressure. Fame, as David Bowie once wrote, does change a person. How they handle it determines their longevity in the field of endeavor they’ve chosen. We’ve seen freak outs before. Axl Rose was famous for them. Gene Simmons of KISS walked out of an interview with Terry Gross. Jimi Hendrix walked off the stage at Madison Square Garden claiming he just didn’t “feel it.” The interaction between an artist and their audience is often crucial to a great gig. Larry David, when he was doing standup, would often walk out, tell one joke and, if he didn’t get the response he wanted, would not finish his set. Fame does weird things to a soul. The constant pressures and demands for your time, your energy, your artistry can wear a person out. Most artists today, like Adele, know when to take a break, assured that her fans will still be there when they return. Fame, if you’re not careful, will mess you up so badly (as it did for artists such as Amy Winehouse and the Gallagher brothers from Oasis) that you wind up losing everything you worked for and, in some cases, it’s too late to start again. I hope that younger artists learn longevity lessons from their elders. I hope they look at a career like Joni Mitchell’s, starting with her fresh-faced rise in Canada to a string of hits as well as lovers, to her enshrinement as the Queen Of Tell All Songwriting, to her recent illness and recovery. What a wild ride! Nevertheless, she persisted. Some would say that’s the price you pay for creating great art. I think it’s the price you pay for living. Every one of us has bad years and good days, terrible emotional pitfalls and moments of extraordinary grace. It’s up to us to use the good we’ve experienced in our lives to stay strong and support others and use the bad as life lessons and perhaps teach through example. A three-point play by Lynn Kidd gave the Hurricanes a 79-75 lead with 2:11 remaining. Berry hit a 3-pointer to make it 79-78 and Johnson followed with a 3 that gave the Buccaneers an 81-79 lead. Kidd missed in the paint for Miami but came up with a steal a few seconds later. With 15 seconds left, Swartz missed a 3-pointer and the Buccaneers rebounded. Miami put Berry on the line and he made both free throws for a four-point lead with 11 seconds remaining. Miami’s Jalen Blackmon missed a 3-pointer with 8 seconds left, the Hurricanes’ A.J.
