RICHMOND — With speeding and sideshows occupying intersections still a persistent issue in Richmond, councilmembers are set to consider directing staff to urgently identify measures to bring safety to city streets. An item on Tuesday night’s Richmond City Council agenda calls for staff to identify traffic calming measures that would abate speeding and donuts in at least six areas throughout the city in an effort to address a serious public safety risk that’s resulted in property damage, injuries and death in the last year alone. “I’d venture to say that no city street is safe,” said Richmond Police Capt. Matt Stonebraker during a monthly crime prevention meeting focused on sideshows held on Oct. 23. The staff report for the item, brought forward by Councilmember Cesar Zepeda, did not specify which six locations should be studied but Canal Boulevard was called out as a specific area of concern. In mid-October, a 16-year-old was killed and her 11-year-old sister injured in a speeding accident on the 600 block of Canal Boulevard. Richmond officers arrested nine people and impounded four cars just weeks ago in response to a sideshow with more than 50 vehicles and 200 participants on the same street. Sideshows have also occurred near Hilltop Mall. Participants of a large sideshow in late September damaged multiple cars at nearby auto dealerships and a Richmond Police Department vehicle, the department shared on its social media platforms. The “well organized” unauthorized events, which have grown in size, are occurring nearly every weekend and pull in crowds from outside the region, Stonebraker said. “It’s dangerous not only for the participants, not only for the spectators, but for the community at large and everyone around them or anybody that’s there,” Stonebraker said. “It’s dangerous. We want them to stop and we’re doing everything we can at this point to curb that.” Mayor Eduardo Martinez made his stance on the issue clear in an Oct. 1 Facebook post. Martinez, who has advocated for creating a space where sideshows can occur legally, said he is not in support of and has never encouraged breaking the law. The mayor noted in his post that sideshows — a term he’s wary of using because it does not fully encompass all types of reckless driving and can be used to demonize different parts of the community — are a regional issue. Similarly, Stonebraker said it’s typical for sideshows to travel from San Jose, through the East Bay and San Francisco, up to Sacramento. About 15 sideshows occurred in September alone, an average of about three a week, said Sgt. Enrik Melgoza during the October crime prevention meeting. To address the problem locally, Martinez said the city is working on hiring additional personnel, collaborating with neighboring agencies and deploying Flock cameras that collect vehicle information used to track down suspects. “I am fully committed to ensuring that our city remains safe for all residents, businesses, and visitors,” Martinez said. “These lawless actions do not represent the values of our Richmond residents, and we will do everything in our power to protect our community.” Police spokesperson Lynelle Sanchez said the department is also routinely monitoring for speeding in key corridors like Macdonald Avenue and 23rd Street. Officers issued 17 citations to drivers who failed to yield to pedestrians or were speeding near crosswalks during a recent traffic operation, she said. If the council back’s Zepeda’s request, staff would be directed to return before the end of January 2025 with identified traffic calming measures. Tawfic Halaby, deputy Public Works director of operations and maintenance, said during last month’s crime prevention meeting that the department is reaching out to neighboring jurisdictions to determine what types of measures have been successful. In the meantime, Sanchez encouraged the public to do their part in preventing traffic accidents by driving safely. “We really need the community to come together to make sure everyone stays safe,” Sanchez said. “Everybody’s in a rush trying to get home and feed their kids, but as residents we can do our part to help each other, especially around gatherings of people before and after school.” Zepeda did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

There is $1 trillion in government spending ripe for the cutting, Iowa Republican U.S. Sen. Joni Ernst said this week in a letter to Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy. Tech billionaire Musk and former GOP presidential candidate Ramaswamy are heading the newly formed Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, an advisory body to President-elect Donald Trump’s incoming administration. Ernst has embraced the department’s goal of cutting $2 trillion in government spending. Ernst late last week formed a DOGE caucus of Senate Republicans to involve Congress in discussions of spending cuts with Musk and Ramaswamy. U.S. Sen. Joni Ernst talks about Rep. Ashley Hinson during Ashley Hinson’s BBQ Bash at Hawkeye Downs in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on Saturday, Aug. 3, 2024. (Savannah Blake/The Gazette) Federal spending is determined by Congress and then approved by the president. Ernst earlier this week sent a letter to Musk and Ramaswamy in which she detailed what she believes are options for up to $1 trillion in federal spending cuts. “Washington has been gobbling up tax dollars and asking for seconds and thirds for far too long,” Ernst said this week in a Thanksgiving-themed statement. “The DOGE team has our knives out, and we are ready to trim the fat on the overstuffed budget and billion-dollar gravy trains to nowhere. It is time to make the federal government go cold turkey on waste.” Ernst’s targets for spending cuts, as identified in her letter, include: In her letter to Musk and Ramaswamy, Ernst evoked the “Make ’em squeal” proclamation from her first U.S. Senate campaign in 2014 and said that her fight to cut government waste has been lonely because, “Democrats and Republicans always come together in agreement over one issue: living high off the hog.” “When faced with proposals to trim the fat from Washington’s budget, members of Congress from both parties act like Goldilocks. It’s too little or too big, always too hard, and never just right,” Ernst said in the letter. Sen. Joni Ernst and Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks talk about Amazon and its impact on the region after touring the Davenport robotics fulfillment center, which fulfilled its first customer order Feb. 4. Since then, according to Amazon, more than 4 million items have been sorted in the facility and then shipped to Amazon customers. Among President-elect Donald Trump's picks are Susie Wiles for chief of staff, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio for secretary of state, former Democratic House member Tulsi Gabbard for director of national intelligence and Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz for attorney general. Susie Wiles, 67, was a senior adviser to Trump's 2024 presidential campaign and its de facto manager. Trump named Florida Sen. Marco Rubio to be secretary of state, making a former sharp critic his choice to be the new administration's top diplomat. Rubio, 53, is a noted hawk on China, Cuba and Iran, and was a finalist to be Trump's running mate on the Republican ticket last summer. Rubio is the vice chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee and a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. “He will be a strong Advocate for our Nation, a true friend to our Allies, and a fearless Warrior who will never back down to our adversaries,” Trump said of Rubio in a statement. The announcement punctuates the hard pivot Rubio has made with Trump, whom the senator called a “con man" during his unsuccessful campaign for the 2016 GOP presidential nomination. Their relationship improved dramatically while Trump was in the White House. And as Trump campaigned for the presidency a third time, Rubio cheered his proposals. For instance, Rubio, who more than a decade ago helped craft immigration legislation that included a path to citizenship for people in the U.S. illegally, now supports Trump's plan to use the U.S. military for mass deportations. Pete Hegseth, 44, is a co-host of Fox News Channel’s “Fox & Friends Weekend” and has been a contributor with the network since 2014, where he developed a friendship with Trump, who made regular appearances on the show. Hegseth lacks senior military or national security experience. If confirmed by the Senate, he would inherit the top job during a series of global crises — ranging from Russia’s war in Ukraine and the ongoing attacks in the Middle East by Iranian proxies to the push for a cease-fire between Israel, Hamas and Hezbollah and escalating worries about the growing alliance between Russia and North Korea. Hegseth is also the author of “The War on Warriors: Behind the Betrayal of the Men Who Keep Us Free,” published earlier this year. Trump tapped Pam Bondi, 59, to be attorney general after U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz withdrew his name from consideration. She was Florida's first female attorney general, serving between 2011 and 2019. She also was on Trump’s legal team during his first impeachment trial in 2020. Considered a loyalist, she served as part of a Trump-allied outside group that helped lay the groundwork for his future administration called the America First Policy Institute. Bondi was among a group of Republicans who showed up to support Trump at his hush money criminal trial in New York that ended in May with a conviction on 34 felony counts. A fierce defender of Trump, she also frequently appears on Fox News and has been a critic of the criminal cases against him. Trump picked South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem, a well-known conservative who faced sharp criticism for telling a story in her memoir about shooting a rambunctious dog, to lead an agency crucial to the president-elect’s hardline immigration agenda. Noem used her two terms leading a tiny state to vault to a prominent position in Republican politics. South Dakota is usually a political afterthought. But during the COVID-19 pandemic, Noem did not order restrictions that other states had issued and instead declared her state “open for business.” Trump held a fireworks rally at Mount Rushmore in July 2020 in one of the first large gatherings of the pandemic. She takes over a department with a sprawling mission. In addition to key immigration agencies, the Department of Homeland Security oversees natural disaster response, the U.S. Secret Service, and Transportation Security Administration agents who work at airports. The governor of North Dakota, who was once little-known outside his state, Burgum is a former Republican presidential primary contender who endorsed Trump, and spent months traveling to drum up support for him, after dropping out of the race. Burgum was a serious contender to be Trump’s vice presidential choice this summer. The two-term governor was seen as a possible pick because of his executive experience and business savvy. Burgum also has close ties to deep-pocketed energy industry CEOs. Trump made the announcement about Burgum joining his incoming administration while addressing a gala at his Mar-a-Lago club, and said a formal statement would be coming the following day. In comments to reporters before Trump took the stage, Burgum said that, in recent years, the power grid is deteriorating in many parts of the country, which he said could raise national security concerns but also drive up prices enough to increase inflation. “There's just a sense of urgency, and a sense of understanding in the Trump administration,” Burgum said. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. ran for president as a Democrat, than as an independent, and then endorsed Trump . He's the son of Democratic icon Robert Kennedy, who was assassinated during his own presidential campaign. The nomination of Kennedy to lead the Department of Health and Human Services alarmed people who are concerned about his record of spreading unfounded fears about vaccines . For example, he has long advanced the debunked idea that vaccines cause autism. Scott Bessent, 62, is a former George Soros money manager and an advocate for deficit reduction. He's the founder of hedge fund Key Square Capital Management, after having worked on-and-off for Soros Fund Management since 1991. If confirmed by the Senate, he would be the nation’s first openly gay treasury secretary. He told Bloomberg in August that he decided to join Trump’s campaign in part to attack the mounting U.S. national debt. That would include slashing government programs and other spending. “This election cycle is the last chance for the U.S. to grow our way out of this mountain of debt without becoming a sort of European-style socialist democracy,” he said then. Oregon Republican U.S. Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer narrowly lost her reelection bid this month, but received strong backing from union members in her district. As a potential labor secretary, she would oversee the Labor Department’s workforce, its budget and put forth priorities that impact workers’ wages, health and safety, ability to unionize, and employer’s rights to fire employers, among other responsibilities. Chavez-DeRemer is one of few House Republicans to endorse the “Protecting the Right to Organize” or PRO Act would allow more workers to conduct organizing campaigns and would add penalties for companies that violate workers’ rights. The act would also weaken “right-to-work” laws that allow employees in more than half the states to avoid participating in or paying dues to unions that represent workers at their places of employment. Scott Turner is a former NFL player and White House aide. He ran the White House Opportunity and Revitalization Council during Trump’s first term in office. Trump, in a statement, credited Turner, the highest-ranking Black person he’s yet selected for his administration, with “helping to lead an Unprecedented Effort that Transformed our Country’s most distressed communities.” Sean Duffy is a former House member from Wisconsin who was one of Trump's most visible defenders on cable news. Duffy served in the House for nearly nine years, sitting on the Financial Services Committee and chairing the subcommittee on insurance and housing. He left Congress in 2019 for a TV career and has been the host of “The Bottom Line” on Fox Business. Before entering politics, Duffy was a reality TV star on MTV, where he met his wife, “Fox and Friends Weekend” co-host Rachel Campos-Duffy. They have nine children. A campaign donor and CEO of Denver-based Liberty Energy, Write is a vocal advocate of oil and gas development, including fracking — a key pillar of Trump’s quest to achieve U.S. “energy dominance” in the global market. Wright also has been one of the industry’s loudest voices against efforts to fight climate change. He said the climate movement around the world is “collapsing under its own weight.” The Energy Department is responsible for advancing energy, environmental and nuclear security of the United States. Wright also won support from influential conservatives, including oil and gas tycoon Harold Hamm. Hamm, executive chairman of Oklahoma-based Continental Resources, a major shale oil company, is a longtime Trump supporter and adviser who played a key role on energy issues in Trump’s first term. President-elect Donald Trump tapped billionaire professional wrestling mogul Linda McMahon to be secretary of the Education Department, tasked with overseeing an agency Trump promised to dismantle. McMahon led the Small Business Administration during Trump’s initial term from 2017 to 2019 and twice ran unsuccessfully as a Republican for the U.S. Senate in Connecticut. She’s seen as a relative unknown in education circles, though she expressed support for charter schools and school choice. She served on the Connecticut Board of Education for a year starting in 2009 and has spent years on the board of trustees for Sacred Heart University in Connecticut. Brooke Rollins, who graduated from Texas A&M University with a degree in agricultural development, is a longtime Trump associate who served as White House domestic policy chief during his first presidency. The 52-year-old is president and CEO of the America First Policy Institute, a group helping to lay the groundwork for a second Trump administration. She previously served as an aide to former Texas Gov. Rick Perry and ran a think tank, the Texas Public Policy Foundation. Trump chose Howard Lutnick, head of brokerage and investment bank Cantor Fitzgerald and a cryptocurrency enthusiast, as his nominee for commerce secretary, a position in which he'd have a key role in carrying out Trump's plans to raise and enforce tariffs. Trump made the announcement Tuesday on his social media platform, Truth Social. Lutnick is a co-chair of Trump’s transition team, along with Linda McMahon, the former wrestling executive who previously led Trump’s Small Business Administration. Both are tasked with putting forward candidates for key roles in the next administration. The nomination would put Lutnick in charge of a sprawling Cabinet agency that is involved in funding new computer chip factories, imposing trade restrictions, releasing economic data and monitoring the weather. It is also a position in which connections to CEOs and the wider business community are crucial. Doug Collins is a former Republican congressman from Georgia who gained recognition for defending Trump during his first impeachment trial, which centered on U.S. assistance for Ukraine. Trump was impeached for urging Ukraine to investigate Joe Biden in 2019 during the Democratic presidential nomination, but he was acquitted by the Senate. Collins has also served in the armed forces himself and is currently a chaplain in the United States Air Force Reserve Command. "We must take care of our brave men and women in uniform, and Doug will be a great advocate for our Active Duty Servicemembers, Veterans, and Military Families to ensure they have the support they need," Trump said in a statement about nominating Collins to lead the Department of Veterans Affairs. Karoline Leavitt, 27, was Trump's campaign press secretary and currently a spokesperson for his transition. She would be the youngest White House press secretary in history. The White House press secretary typically serves as the public face of the administration and historically has held daily briefings for the press corps. Leavitt, a New Hampshire native, was a spokesperson for MAGA Inc., a super PAC supporting Trump, before joining his 2024 campaign. In 2022, she ran for Congress in New Hampshire, winning a 10-way Republican primary before losing to Democratic Rep. Chris Pappas. Leavitt worked in the White House press office during Trump's first term before she became communications director for New York Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik, Trump's choice for U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. Former Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard has been tapped by Trump to be director of national intelligence, keeping with the trend to stock his Cabinet with loyal personalities rather than veteran professionals in their requisite fields. Gabbard, 43, was a Democratic House member who unsuccessfully sought the party's 2020 presidential nomination before leaving the party in 2022. She endorsed Trump in August and campaigned often with him this fall. “I know Tulsi will bring the fearless spirit that has defined her illustrious career to our Intelligence Community,” Trump said in a statement. Gabbard, who has served in the Army National Guard for more than two decades, deploying to Iraq and Kuwait, would come to the role as somewhat of an outsider compared to her predecessor. The current director, Avril Haines, was confirmed by the Senate in 2021 following several years in a number of top national security and intelligence positions. Trump has picked John Ratcliffe, a former Texas congressman who served as director of national intelligence during his first administration, to be director of the Central Intelligence Agency in his next. Ratcliffe was director of national intelligence during the final year and a half of Trump's first term, leading the U.S. government's spy agencies during the coronavirus pandemic. “I look forward to John being the first person ever to serve in both of our Nation's highest Intelligence positions,” Trump said in a statement, calling him a “fearless fighter for the Constitutional Rights of all Americans” who would ensure “the Highest Levels of National Security, and PEACE THROUGH STRENGTH.” Trump has chosen former New York Rep. Lee Zeldin to serve as his pick to lead the Environmental Protection Agency . Zeldin does not appear to have any experience in environmental issues, but is a longtime supporter of the former president. The 44-year-old former U.S. House member from New York wrote on X , “We will restore US energy dominance, revitalize our auto industry to bring back American jobs, and make the US the global leader of AI.” “We will do so while protecting access to clean air and water,” he added. During his campaign, Trump often attacked the Biden administration's promotion of electric vehicles, and incorrectly referring to a tax credit for EV purchases as a government mandate. Trump also often told his audiences during the campaign his administration would “Drill, baby, drill,” referring to his support for expanded petroleum exploration. In a statement, Trump said Zeldin “will ensure fair and swift deregulatory decisions that will be enacted in a way to unleash the power of American businesses, while at the same time maintaining the highest environmental standards, including the cleanest air and water on the planet.” Trump has named Brendan Carr, the senior Republican on the Federal Communications Commission, as the new chairman of the agency tasked with regulating broadcasting, telecommunications and broadband. Carr is a longtime member of the commission and served previously as the FCC’s general counsel. He has been unanimously confirmed by the Senate three times and was nominated by both Trump and President Joe Biden to the commission. Carr made past appearances on “Fox News Channel," including when he decried Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris' pre-Election Day appearance on “Saturday Night Live.” He wrote an op-ed last month defending a satellite company owned by Trump supporter Elon Musk. Rep. Elise Stefanik is a representative from New York and one of Trump's staunchest defenders going back to his first impeachment. Elected to the House in 2014, Stefanik was selected by her GOP House colleagues as House Republican Conference chair in 2021, when former Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney was removed from the post after publicly criticizing Trump for falsely claiming he won the 2020 election. Stefanik, 40, has served in that role ever since as the third-ranking member of House leadership. Stefanik’s questioning of university presidents over antisemitism on their campuses helped lead to two of those presidents resigning, further raising her national profile. If confirmed, she would represent American interests at the U.N. as Trump vows to end the war waged by Russia against Ukraine begun in 2022. He has also called for peace as Israel continues its offensive against Hamas in Gaza and its invasion of Lebanon to target Hezbollah. President-elect Donald Trump says he's chosen former acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker to serve as U.S. ambassador to NATO. Trump has expressed skepticism about the Western military alliance for years. Trump said in a statement Wednesday that Whitaker is “a strong warrior and loyal Patriot” who “will ensure the United States’ interests are advanced and defended” and “strengthen relationships with our NATO Allies, and stand firm in the face of threats to Peace and Stability.” The choice of Whitaker as the nation’s representative to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization is an unusual one, given his background is as a lawyer and not in foreign policy. A Republican congressman from Michigan who served from 1993 to 2011, Hoekstra was ambassador to the Netherlands during Trump's first term. “In my Second Term, Pete will help me once again put AMERICA FIRST,” Trump said in a statement announcing his choice. “He did an outstanding job as United States Ambassador to the Netherlands during our first four years, and I am confident that he will continue to represent our Country well in this new role.” Trump will nominate former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee to be ambassador to Israel. Huckabee is a staunch defender of Israel and his intended nomination comes as Trump has promised to align U.S. foreign policy more closely with Israel's interests as it wages wars against the Iran-backed Hamas and Hezbollah. “He loves Israel, and likewise the people of Israel love him,” Trump said in a statement. “Mike will work tirelessly to bring about peace in the Middle East.” Huckabee, who ran unsuccessfully for the Republican presidential nomination in 2008 and 2016, has been a popular figure among evangelical Christian conservatives, many of whom support Israel due to Old Testament writings that Jews are God’s chosen people and that Israel is their rightful homeland. Trump has been praised by some in this important Republican voting bloc for moving the U.S. embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Trump on Tuesday named real estate investor Steven Witkoff to be special envoy to the Middle East. The 67-year-old Witkoff is the president-elect's golf partner and was golfing with him at Trump's club in West Palm Beach, Florida, on Sept. 15, when the former president was the target of a second attempted assassination. Witkoff “is a Highly Respected Leader in Business and Philanthropy,” Trump said of Witkoff in a statement. “Steve will be an unrelenting Voice for PEACE, and make us all proud." Trump also named Witkoff co-chair, with former Georgia Sen. Kelly Loeffler, of his inaugural committee. Trump asked Rep. Michael Waltz, R-Fla., a retired Army National Guard officer and war veteran, to be his national security adviser, Trump announced in a statement Tuesday. The move puts Waltz in the middle of national security crises, ranging from efforts to provide weapons to Ukraine and worries about the growing alliance between Russia and North Korea to the persistent attacks in the Middle East by Iran proxies and the push for a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas and Hezbollah. “Mike has been a strong champion of my America First Foreign Policy agenda,” Trump's statement said, "and will be a tremendous champion of our pursuit of Peace through Strength!” Waltz is a three-term GOP congressman from east-central Florida. He served multiple tours in Afghanistan and also worked in the Pentagon as a policy adviser when Donald Rumsfeld and Robert Gates were defense chiefs. He is considered hawkish on China, and called for a U.S. boycott of the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing due to its involvement in the origin of COVID-19 and its mistreatment of the minority Muslim Uighur population. Stephen Miller, an immigration hardliner , was a vocal spokesperson during the presidential campaign for Trump's priority of mass deportations. The 39-year-old was a senior adviser during Trump's first administration. Miller has been a central figure in some of Trump's policy decisions, notably his move to separate thousands of immigrant families. Trump argued throughout the campaign that the nation's economic, national security and social priorities could be met by deporting people who are in the United States illegally. Since Trump left office in 2021, Miller has served as the president of America First Legal, an organization made up of former Trump advisers aimed at challenging the Biden administration, media companies, universities and others over issues such as free speech and national security. Thomas Homan, 62, has been tasked with Trump’s top priority of carrying out the largest deportation operation in the nation’s history. Homan, who served under Trump in his first administration leading U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, was widely expected to be offered a position related to the border, an issue Trump made central to his campaign. Though Homan has insisted such a massive undertaking would be humane, he has long been a loyal supporter of Trump's policy proposals, suggesting at a July conference in Washington that he would be willing to "run the biggest deportation operation this country’s ever seen.” Democrats have criticized Homan for his defending Trump's “zero tolerance” policy on border crossings during his first administration, which led to the separation of thousands of parents and children seeking asylum at the border. Dr. Mehmet Oz, 64, is a former heart surgeon who hosted “The Dr. Oz Show,” a long-running daytime television talk show. He ran unsuccessfully for the U.S. Senate as the Republican nominee in 2022 and is an outspoken supporter of Trump, who endorsed Oz's bid for elected office. Elon Musk, left, and Vivek Ramaswamy speak before Republican presidential nominee former President Donald Trump at an Oct. 27 campaign rally at Madison Square Garden in New York. Trump on Tuesday said Musk and former Republican presidential candidate Ramaswamy will lead a new “Department of Government Efficiency" — which is not, despite the name, a government agency. The acronym “DOGE” is a nod to Musk's favorite cryptocurrency, dogecoin. Trump said Musk and Ramaswamy will work from outside the government to offer the White House “advice and guidance” and will partner with the Office of Management and Budget to “drive large scale structural reform, and create an entrepreneurial approach to Government never seen before.” He added the move would shock government systems. It's not clear how the organization will operate. Musk, owner of X and CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has been a constant presence at Mar-a-Lago since Trump won the presidential election. Ramaswamy suspended his campaign in January and threw his support behind Trump. Trump said the two will “pave the way for my Administration to dismantle Government Bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure Federal Agencies.” Russell Vought held the position during Trump’s first presidency. After Trump’s initial term ended, Vought founded the Center for Renewing America, a think tank that describes its mission as “renew a consensus of America as a nation under God.” Vought was closely involved with Project 2025, a conservative blueprint for Trump’s second term that he tried to distance himself from during the campaign. Vought has also previously worked as the executive and budget director for the Republican Study Committee, a caucus for conservative House Republicans. He also worked at Heritage Action, the political group tied to The Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank. Dan Scavino, deputy chief of staff Scavino, whom Trump's transition referred to in a statement as one of “Trump's longest serving and most trusted aides,” was a senior adviser to Trump's 2024 campaign, as well as his 2016 and 2020 campaigns. He will be deputy chief of staff and assistant to the president. Scavino had run Trump's social media profile in the White House during his first administration. He was also held in contempt of Congress in 2022 after a month-long refusal to comply with a subpoena from the House committee’s investigation into the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. James Blair, deputy chief of staff Blair was political director for Trump's 2024 campaign and for the Republican National Committee. He will be deputy chief of staff for legislative, political and public affairs and assistant to the president. Blair was key to Trump's economic messaging during his winning White House comeback campaign this year, a driving force behind the candidate's “Trump can fix it” slogan and his query to audiences this fall if they were better off than four years ago. Taylor Budowich, deputy chief of staff Budowich is a veteran Trump campaign aide who launched and directed Make America Great Again, Inc., a super PAC that supported Trump's 2024 campaign. He will be deputy chief of staff for communications and personnel and assistant to the president. Budowich also had served as a spokesman for Trump after his presidency. William McGinley, White House counsel McGinley was White House Cabinet secretary during Trump's first administration, and was outside legal counsel for the Republican National Committee's election integrity effort during the 2024 campaign. In a statement, Trump called McGinley “a smart and tenacious lawyer who will help me advance our America First agenda, while fighting for election integrity and against the weaponization of law enforcement.” Jay Bhattacharya, National Institutes of Health Trump has chosen Dr. Jay Bhattacharya to lead the National Institutes of Health. Bhattacharya is a physician and professor at Stanford University School of Medicine, and is a critic of pandemic lockdowns and vaccine mandates. He promoted the idea of herd immunity during the pandemic, arguing that people at low risk should live normally while building up immunity to COVID-19 through infection. The National Institutes of Health funds medical research through competitive grants to researchers at institutions throughout the nation. NIH also conducts its own research with thousands of scientists working at its labs in Bethesda, Maryland. Jamieson Greer, U.S. trade representative Kevin Hassett, Director of the White House National Economic Council Trump is turning to two officials with experience navigating not only Washington but the key issues of income taxes and tariffs as he fills out his economic team. He announced he has chosen international trade attorney Jamieson Greer to be his U.S. trade representative and Kevin Hassett as director of the White House National Economic Council. While Trump has in several cases nominated outsiders to key posts, these picks reflect a recognition that his reputation will likely hinge on restoring the public’s confidence in the economy. Trump said in a statement that Greer was instrumental in his first term in imposing tariffs on China and others and replacing the trade agreement with Canada and Mexico, “therefore making it much better for American Workers.” Hassett, 62, served in the first Trump term as chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers. He has a doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania and worked at the right-leaning American Enterprise Institute before joining the Trump White House in 2017. Protesters cut off traffic on main avenues in the city center, holding up homemade signs in Spanish reading “Fewer apartments for investing and more homes for living" and “The people without homes uphold their rights.” The lack of affordable housing has become one of the leading concerns for the southern European Union country, mirroring the housing crunch across many parts of the world, including the United States . Organizers said that over 100,000 had turned out, while Barcelona’s police said they estimated some 22,000 marched. Either way, the throngs of people clogging the streets recalled the massive separatist rallies at the heigh of the previous decade’s Catalan independence movement. Now, social concerns led by housing have displaced political crusades. That is because the average rent for Spain has doubled in last 10 years. The price per square meter has risen from 7.2 euros ($7.5) in 2014 to 13 euros this year, according to the popular online real estate website Idealista. The growth is even more acute in cities like Barcelona and Madrid. Incomes meanwhile have failed to keep up, especially for younger people in a country with chronically high unemployment. Protestor Samuel Saintot said he is “frustrated and scared” after being told by the owners of the apartment he has rented for the past 15 years in Barcelona’s city center that he must vacate the premises. He suspects that the owners want him out so they can renovate it and boost the price. “Even looking in a 20- or 30-kilometer radius outside town, I can’t even find anything within the price range I can afford,” he told The Associated Press. “And I consider myself a very fortunate person, because I earn a decent salary. And even in my case, I may be forced to leave town.” A report by the Bank of Spain indicates that nearly 40% of Spaniards who rent dedicate an average of 40% of their income to paying rents and utilities, compared to the European Union average of 27% of renters who do so. “We are talking about a housing emergency. It means people having many difficulties both in accessing and staying in their homes,” said Ignasi Martí, professor for Esade business school and head of its Dignified Housing Observatory. The rise in rents is causing significant pain in Spain, where traditionally people seek to own their homes. Rental prices have also been driven up by short-term renters including tourists. Many migrants to Spain are also disproportionately hit by the high rents because they often do not have enough savings. Spain is near the bottom end of OECD countries with under 2% of all housing available being public housing for rent. The OECD average is 7%. Spain is far behind France, with 14%, Britain with 16%, and the Netherlands with 34%. Carme Arcarazo, spokesperson for Barcelona’s Tenants Union which helped organize the protest, said that renters should consider a “rent strike” and cease paying their monthly rents in a mass protest movement. “I think we the tenants have understood that this depends on us. That we can’t keep asking and making demands to the authorities and waiting for an answer. We must take the reins of the situation,” Arcarazo told the AP. “So, if they (the owners) won’t lower the rent, then we will force them to do it." The Barcelona protest came a month after tens of thousands rallied against high rents in Madrid. The rising discontent over housing is putting pressure on Spain’s governing Socialist party, which leads a coalition on the national level and is in charge of Catalonia’s regional government and Barcelona’s city hall. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez presided over what the government termed a “housing summit” including government officials and real estate developers last month. But the Barcelona’s Tenants Union boycotted the event, saying it was like calling a summit for curing cancer and inviting tobacco companies to participate. The leading government measure has been a rent cap mechanism that the central government has offered to regional authorities based on a price index established by the housing ministry. Rent controls can be applied to areas deemed to be “highly stressed” by high rental prices. Catalonia was the first region to apply those caps, which are in place in downtown Barcelona. Many locals blame the million of tourists who visit Barcelona, and the rest of Spain, each year for the high prices. Barcelona’s town hall has pledged to completely eliminate the city’s 10,000 so called “tourist apartments,” or dwellings with permits for short-term rents, by 2028.

NEW YORK — Several of President- elect Donald Trump's Cabinet picks and appointees have been targeted by bomb threats and “swatting attacks," Trump's transition said Wednesday. “Last night and this morning, several of President Trump’s Cabinet nominees and Administration appointees were targeted in violent, unAmerican threats to their lives and those who live with them," Trump transition spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said in a statement. She said the attacks “ranged from bomb threats to ‘swatting.' In response, law enforcement and other authorities acted quickly to ensure the safety of those who were targeted. President Trump and the entire Transition team are grateful for their swift action.” Swatting entails generating an emergency law enforcement response against a target victim under false pretenses. The FBI said in a statement that it is “aware of numerous bomb threats and swatting incidents targeting incoming administration nominees and appointees, and we are working with our law enforcement partners. We take all potential threats seriously, and as always, encourage members of the public to immediately report anything they consider suspicious to law enforcement.” Among those targeted was New York Rep. Elise Stefanik, Trump's pick to serve as the next ambassador to the United Nations . Her office said that, Wednesday morning, she, her husband, and their 3-year-old son were driving home from Washington for Thanksgiving when they were informed of a bomb threat to their residence in Saratoga County. "New York State, County law enforcement, and U.S. Capitol Police responded immediately with the highest levels of professionalism," her office said in a statement. “We are incredibly appreciative of the extraordinary dedication of law enforcement officers who keep our communities safe 24/7." In Florida, meanwhile, the Okaloosa County sheriff’s office said in an advisory posted on Facebook that it “received notification of a bomb threat referencing former Congressman Matt Gaetz’s supposed mailbox at a home in the Niceville area around 9 a.m. this morning.” While a family member resides at the address, they said "former Congressman Gaetz is NOT a resident. “The mailbox however was cleared and no devices were located. The immediate area was also searched with negative results.” Gaetz was Trump’s initial pick to serve as attorney general, but he withdrew from consideration amid allegations that he paid women for sex and slept with underage women. Gaetz has vehemently denied any wrongdoing and said last year that a Justice Department investigation into sex trafficking allegations involving underage girls had ended with no federal charges against him. The threats follow a political campaign marked by unusual violence. In July, a gunman opened fire at a Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, grazing the then-candidate in the ear with a bullet and killing one of his supporters. The U.S. Secret Service later thwarted a subsequent assassination attempt at Trump's West Palm Beach, Florida, golf course when an agent spotted the barrel of a gun poking through a perimeter fence while Trump was golfing. ___ Associated Press writers Alanna Durkin Richer and Eric Tucker contributed to this report from Washington.YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (AP) — EJ Farmer scored 20 points as Youngstown State beat Toledo 93-87 on Saturday. Farmer went 8 of 15 from the field (3 for 8 from 3-point range) for the Penguins (6-5). Nico Galette scored 17 points while shooting 5 for 13 (3 for 8 from 3-point range) and 4 of 6 from the free-throw line and added 11 rebounds and seven assists. Juwan Maxey shot 4 for 9 (3 for 7 from 3-point range) and 5 of 5 from the free-throw line to finish with 16 points. Sam Lewis led the Rockets (6-4) in scoring, finishing with 21 points and eight rebounds. Sonny Wilson added 17 points, six rebounds and four assists for Toledo. Seth Hubbard had 14 points. Farmer put up 13 points in the first half for Youngstown State, who led 44-39 at halftime. Youngstown State used a 7-0 second-half run to break a 76-76 tie and take the lead at 83-76 with 3:14 remaining in the half before finishing off the victory. Galette scored 12 second-half points. Abdelgowad scores 26 in UMass' 86-52 victory over UMass-BostonAfter further review, has reversed his stance on one central figure in the halftime brouhaha during the crosstown rivalry game. The coach acknowledged Wednesday that head performance coach Corey Miller — — escalated tensions between the teams last weekend after video surfaced showing Miller making a mock crying gesture and giving USC players the middle finger. Miller expressed regret for his actions, Foster said, and would face unspecified discipline. “We talked about it, sat down and was able to figure that out internally and he felt pretty bad about that,” Foster said, “so he expressed his sentiments to the team, to the coaches and everybody and you’ve got to lead by example out here. You can’t be completely — you just can’t be out of control in any situation, especially when you’re in a [position] of power, so it was an unfortunate situation and he feels awful about what happened and getting a penalty and he made sure he made it right with the team.” Miller received one of three unsportsmanlike conduct penalties that went against UCLA, joining wide receiver Kwazi Gilmer and safety Bryan Addison. Foster said after the game that he was told the fracas started when a USC player punched Gilmer. UCLA was forced to kick off from its own five-yard line to start the third quarter as a result of the penalties, but the Trojans could not gain a first down and gave the ball back to the Bruins following a turnover on downs. Foster brought Miller back to UCLA to be part of his new staff before the season after Miller had spent the 2022 season as the Bruins’ director of speed and movement. Miller was the assistant director of strength and conditioning for the NFL’s Carolina Panthers during the 2023 season. “With his added NFL experience,” Foster said at the time of Miller’s hiring, “I feel there is no one better to uphold our pillars while preparing the Bruins for Big Ten Conference play and beyond." Foster said he nominated defensive coordinator for the Broyles Award that goes to the top assistant coach in college football. Might Foster also need to give Malloe a raise given that UCLA lost its last doubled his salary by moving across town to USC? “This is a real family over here, so I think that he’s pretty comfortable,” Foster said, “but we still want to make sure that we honor him and let him know that we do value you and you’re a great coach for us.” Malloe’s two-year contract that expires after the 2025 season pays him $1 million annually — the same rate that Lynn made before his departure. Despite massive personnel losses in the offseason, Malloe has presided over a defense that ranks No. 7 in the country against the run by allowing just 99.3 rushing yards per game. UCLA ranks No. 46 nationally in total defense, giving up 346.3 yards per game. UCLA’s defense could get a major boost next season if stays put. The linebacker who has gone from a walk-on to a finalist for the Butkus Award has another season of eligibility remaining, should he choose to use it. “He’s let me know early like, coach, we’re just going to finish the season and then assess everything after the season,” Foster said of Schwesinger’s message regarding his future. “He’s truly locked in on finishing this year the right way and I can respect that from a guy like that. I didn’t want to even want to put anything in his ear because whatever decisions he makes, I’m going to respect that because Carson’s that type of kid. He’s really going to do whatever’s best for him in that situation, especially if he gets the Butkus Award and the way that he came on and performed this season, you do deserve to get a shot and go to the NFL.” With the transfer portal set to open Dec. 9, Foster said, with a chuckle, that he wanted to know his players’ intentions about their futures by Dec. 5. “There’s a hard turnaround,” Foster said, “so we just want to make sure that we know exactly what’s going on with our team and how guys are feeling, so we know what we need to fill and what we need to do.” This story originally appeared in .

Called The Fright Bus, the Bushtucker Trial was dropped on all the celebs as they finished eating their dinner around the camp fire. Moments earlier, they were seen discussing why the lights were still on in the jungle. GK Barry said: "Predictions... I think we're going to have songs, a little boogy and a bit of birthday cake." Coleen smashed the trial even with Dean’s theatrics...he’s getting so boring "Front row, front row!" she exclaimed. "The seat that everybody wants!" The challenge was simple: the campmates had to endure the bus and work within their rows of three to escape it, passing four stops on its journey. To do this, each row would wait until their stop to manoeuvre three tokens across the bar to the stop button as fast as they could. Every token won, would equate to one piece of luggage. As the gang were told to put their safety goggles on, GK told Jane: "Oh my God, I'm so on edge!" But tapping her knees in anticipation, Jane simply nudged her and replied: "No, come on, we can do this!" She then gently rested her head on GK's shoulder before the task really got going, while wishing everyone luck. Extremely shrill screams is all that could then be heard as creepy crawlies and critters began falling from the roof of the bus onto its famous passengers. The event, hosted at Houston’s NRG Stadium, marked Netflix’s debut in streaming live sports and set a new benchmark for the platform’s global viewership. The nearly 13-minute halftime show, part of the doubleheader titled A Cowboy Carter Christmas, showcased Beyoncé’s signature artistry with tracks from her acclaimed album Cowboy Carter. Joined by surprise guests Post Malone and Shaboozey, the Houston native thrilled her hometown crowd with performances of fan favourites like “16 Carriages,” “Blackbird,” and “YA YA.” The broadcast, which included the Chiefs-Steelers and Ravens-Texans games, was streamed across 200 countries, with over a third of Netflix’s global subscribers tuning in. The Ravens-Texans match, featuring Beyoncé’s halftime show, became the centerpiece of the evening and a defining moment for Netflix’s experimental foray into live sports. The streaming giant’s $150 million investment in the NFL broadcast rights is part of a three-year deal to test its live-streaming capabilities. The gamble appears to have paid off handsomely, with the Chiefs-Steelers game now ranking as Netflix’s second-most-watched live event. While Netflix did not release specific viewership numbers for Beyoncé’s performance, the overwhelming demand prompted the company to announce a standalone special, Beyoncé Bowl, ensuring her historic halftime show remains accessible to fans. The success of the event has sparked speculation about Netflix’s future in live sports. Industry experts suggest the platform may aim to compete for rights to marquee events, including the Super Bowl, which could become available in 2033. As Netflix explores new avenues to expand its live content offerings, Beyoncé’s unforgettable Christmas performance has positioned the company as a serious contender in the world of sports broadcasting. Former U.S. Border Patrol Chief Ronald Vitiello on the dangers of a new migrant caravan coming through Mexico and Massachusetts vowing to push back against potential deportations. Just weeks after Vice President Kamala Harris’ overwhelming loss to President-elect Trump in the 2024 presidential election, the White House released a memo that hailed the Biden-Harris administration as one of the most successful in history. The memo shared on Monday highlighted how President Biden and Harris took office during the COVID-19 pandemic and a "reeling" economy, before going on to call their administration "one of the most successful administrations in history" which "will be leaving behind the best economy in the world." "Under President Biden and Vice President Harris’ leadership, 16 million jobs have been created, and we’ve gotten women and people of color back in the labor force at record rates," the memo stated. "A record 20 million new business applications have been filed, and inflation is down to near pre-pandemic levels." The White House added that "our success" in these areas was due to "passing and implementing legislation that rebuilt our nation’s infrastructure, made the largest investment in climate action in history, lowered prescription drug costs, and spurred a manufacturing renaissance." HARRIS DISAPPEARS FROM SPOTLIGHT, VACATIONS IN HAWAII AFTER ELECTION LOSS The White House released a memo on Monday calling the Biden-Harris administration "one of the most successful administrations in history." (Anna Moneymaker/Getty Images, File) The memo quotes unnamed "business leaders" calling the U.S. economy "among the best performing economies" in decades. The latest jobs report released earlier this month, however, appears to show a different story. The Labor Department report shows that just 12,000 jobs were created in October, far below estimates of up to 120,000 and were the lowest in four years. The unemployment rate was 4.1%, in line with expectations. President Biden bowed out of the 2024 presidential race in July following a dismal debate performance against former President Trump. Vice President Kamala Harris then led the Democratic ticket, ultimately losing to Trump. TRUMP PLANNING TO LIFT BIDEN'S LNG PAUSE, INCREASE OIL DRILLING DURING 1ST DAYS IN OFFICE: REPORT The Labor Department’s inflation report for October found that the consumer price index — a broad measure of how much everyday goods like gasoline, groceries and rent cost — was up 2.6% from a year ago for the U.S. as a whole, in line with expectations as inflation ticked higher amid a broader cooling trend. Days ahead of the presidential election, Trump campaign national press secretary Karoline Leavitt argued that "this jobs report is a catastrophe and definitively reveals how badly Kamala Harris broke our economy." President-elect Trump overwhelmingly defeated Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election, winning both the Electoral College and popular vote. Before I know it, I’m on the brink of a breakdown at the Bryant Park holiday market, waiting in a throng of tourists for overpriced scarves and day-old apple cider donuts. It’s a Christmas tradition of sorts. But this past weekend, I found a cure for my gift-related procrastination at the cavernous Pioneer Works in Brooklyn: the Press Play fair , a two-day gathering for independent publishers. Now in its fifth year, the event brought a wealth of remedies for the mind-numbingly commercial holiday season in the form of zines, books, and stickers — ideas, thoughts, and wishes you can touch and hold. “‘Press Play’ is so much more than excellent wordplay,” observed Passenger Pigeon Press ’s Chance Lockard. “They are things that go really hand in hand. It’s also really awesome to see so many well-dressed people turn out for something so cool.” (Lockard, for his part, sported a beautifully knit hat with ear flaps to drown out the crowded book-fair din.) The extinct species that gives the publisher its name serves as a lodestar for its zines and Martha’s Quarterly edition, an homage to the last known passenger pigeon . Project Manager Holly Greene explained that the press, founded by Tammy Nguyen, is dedicated to “spreading ideas through unconventional paths that are detached from technology and more tangible.” Get the latest art news, reviews and opinions from Hyperallergic. Daily Weekly Opportunities Press Play itself was a physical display of the unconventional paths carved by a global network of publishers, artists, writers, record labels, and editors, with free entry and several artist-led workshops inviting visitors into the fold. Veteran presses and organizations in attendance — Nightboat, Secret Riso Club, and Wendy’s Subway to name a few — tend to frequent the likes of the New York Art Book Fair and East Village Zine Fair , making for an environment of warm reunion. And when I visited during the fair’s final hours on Sunday, December 8, new connections and collaborations were already in bloom. “That’s kind of the magic of small press fairs like this,” said illustrator, cartoonist, and riso artist Christina Lee , whose booth Lockard and Greene recommended. “There’s a really nice community, and I think right now everyone’s really lonely. There’s one component of sharing your work and selling it to make a living, but there’s another component of seeing your friends and making new ones, like Kyle right here,” Lee said, pointing to illustrator and comic artist Kyle Canyon, who was seated at the same table. “I literally just met Kyle.” Canyon also works with risographs and shares practices in common with Lee, a sign of the thoughtful booth curation that undergirded the fair. Serendipity was a common theme across the exhibitors, an observation echoed by Esmé Naumes-Givens, who was sharing a table with MAKE ME! Magazine’s Ann Lukyanova and David Gray. “My mom’s name is Ann and my dad’s name is David, so it’s like kismet,” Naumes-Givens said. The artist is on a mission to create one zine per month before their 30th birthday in April, “kind of demarcating a decade of my life.” What began as a way to raise funds to travel to a friend’s wedding soon snowballed into a collection of deliciously psychedelic zines, all bound by hand with copper wire or wax thread. “I was like, ‘What if every month of my 29th year I made a zine, and at the end I’ll have 12?’” For 30, they plan to shave their head and continue writing, which, true to the fair’s spirit, spans autofiction, visual art, and poetry. “A solid 10% of the visitors who come by the booth have a publishing connection to something we have,” explained Charlotte Anderson of Ellipsis Rare Books , whose display included a first-edition copy of John Berger’s 1972 essay collection and Art History 101 mainstay Ways of Seeing . “I was reading a book this morning while it was a little quieter, and it’s an obscure book of slipstream short stories from the ’90s. I had to hunt for this book just to be able to read it,” said Ellipsis founder Andrew Lenoir. “So I’m sitting here reading it, and a woman comes over and says, ‘You know, my husband published that.’ I didn’t believe her for a second. What are the odds that I was reading it, and she happened to pass by?” Among all these strokes of luck and signs from the small press powers universe, perhaps it’s the lesson of the carrier pigeon that prevails: From riso notecards to handwritten zines, nothing compares to the weight of a piece of paper in your hand. SEO tools are the backbone of successful digital marketing efforts. They help analyze data, track performance, and refine strategies to boost online visibility. From keyword research and backlink analysis to site audits and rank tracking, the right tools can make all the difference. SEO Specialist, Bruce Shi explores the top SEO tools that can unlock your site’s potential. Through his professional perspective, he’ll discuss how these tools can streamline your processes, provide invaluable insights, and ultimately drive more traffic to your site. Understanding SEO and Its Importance SEO is like a recipe for online success. It involves several techniques and practices that make your website more attractive to search engines. Think of search engines as giant libraries. When you type something into Google, it’s like asking the librarian for the best book on that topic. SEO ensures your website is that “best book.” SEO is a fundamental part of digital marketing . The internet is crowded. SEO helps your website stand out in a sea of information. When your site appears on the first page of search results, you’re more likely to get noticed. High search engine rankings give your site credibility. People trust search engines, so when you rank high, it shows you’re a trusted source. “More visibility means more clicks,” says Bruce Shi . “More clicks mean more traffic. More traffic often translates to more customers or readers. SEO isn’t only about search engines but about users.” Good SEO practices improve the overall experience of your site, making it faster and easier to navigate. SEO is like having a billboard at a busy intersection; more people will see it. But unlike a billboard, SEO targets people already interested in what you offer. This makes it one of the most effective forms of marketing. Key Features of Effective SEO Tools Navigating the waters of SEO can be tricky without the right tools. To truly harness the power of SEO, using effective tools is a must. Keyword research is the backbone of any successful SEO strategy. Without identifying the right keywords, your content may not reach its full potential. Keywords are like the signposts that guide traffic to your website. Proper keywords help in attracting the right audience to your website. Knowing what keywords your competitors are targeting allows you to find gaps in the market. “Maintaining your website’s SEO health is crucial for achieving long-term success. This is where site audit tools come into play,” notes Bruce Shi . These tools scan your website to identify issues that could be hindering your SEO performance. Using these site audit tools, you can keep your website healthy and optimized, ensuring that your audience has a smooth and engaging experience on your site. Future Trends in SEO Tools In the ever-changing world of SEO , staying ahead of the curve is crucial. The landscape of SEO tools is constantly evolving with new technologies and strategies. These innovations will help you stay competitive and ensure your content remains relevant and visible. AI and machine learning have made significant strides in recent years. They are now vital components in many SEO tools. These technologies can analyze vast amounts of data faster than any human, providing insights that can optimize your SEO strategy. Imagine having a tool that not only tracks keyword performance but also predicts future trends. AI and machine learning make this possible by learning from past data to forecast what’s next. As smart speakers and voice-activated devices become more popular, voice search is becoming a significant factor in SEO. SEO tools are now incorporating features that help you optimize for voice queries. Traditionally, people typed short phrases into search engines. But with voice search, users tend to ask full questions. SEO tools of the future will focus on understanding natural language and speech patterns to ensure your content aligns with these longer, conversational queries. Gone are the days when you’d wait weeks or even days for SEO reports. Future SEO tools will provide real-time data analysis, offering instant insights into how your strategies are performing. This allows for quicker adjustments and more agile approaches to SEO. Imagine tweaking your content in real-time based on user behavior and search engine algorithms. Real-time data means you can adapt faster and stay ahead of your competition. Keyword clustering is grouping related keywords together to cover a topic comprehensively. Future SEO tools will offer enhanced keyword clustering capabilities. Instead of focusing on single keywords, these tools will help you create clusters of related terms. This holistic approach ensures that your content is well-rounded and covers all relevant aspects of a topic, boosting your chances of ranking higher in search results. Understanding user intent is becoming increasingly important. SEO tools are getting better at analyzing user intent, helping you create content that meets the specific needs of your audience. Future tools will provide deeper insights into user behavior and preferences, allowing you to tailor your content more precisely. This means not just knowing what people are searching for, but why they are searching for it. With more people using mobile devices to access the internet, search engines like Google are prioritizing mobile-friendly websites. Future SEO tools will emphasize mobile-first indexing, ensuring your website is optimized for mobile users. These tools will highlight areas where your site may be lacking in mobile optimization, helping you make necessary adjustments to improve user experience and search rankings. By staying informed about these future trends, you can ensure your SEO efforts remain effective and competitive. Embracing these innovations will help you unlock your SEO potential and achieve better results in the ever-evolving digital landscape. Staying updated with SEO tools and strategies ensures you stay ahead in the digital race. Continuous learning and adaptation are key in the ever-changing landscape of search engine optimization. As the digital world evolves, so do the tools and techniques needed to master it. Embrace the future of SEO with confidence. Stay curious, experiment with new tools, and keep refining your strategies. The commitment to ongoing education and adaptation will keep your SEO tactics sharp and effective. How the stock market defied expectations again this year, by the numbersLiverpool comeback to beat Leicester and move seven points clearThe future of leadership in Africa hinges on a critical skill: AI literacy. As artificial intelligence reshapes industries and societies globally, African boards must embrace this knowledge to remain competitive, ethical, and innovative. AI literacy is no longer optional but essential for board members across the continent, as it equips leaders to harness these advancements responsibly and effectively oversee their organisations in an AI-driven world. Artificial intelligence is revolutionising decision-making processes, offering tools to analyse data, predict trends, and optimise operations. Globally, AI is projected to contribute $15.7 trillion to the economy by 2030, with Africa poised to benefit significantly if its leaders adapt. Yet, many African boards lag in understanding AI’s transformative potential due to gaps in digital literacy and infrastructure. This gap must be urgently addressed to ensure African businesses remain competitive in the global market. The oversight role of boards in AI governance is becoming increasingly critical. According to a recent Deloitte Global survey, only 14% of boards discuss AI at every meeting, while 45% haven’t yet put AI on their agenda at all. This lack of engagement is concerning, especially given the rapid pace of AI development and its potential impact on businesses. African boards must recognise that AI oversight is not just a technical issue but a strategic imperative that demands their attention and understanding. To effectively govern in the age of AI, board members need to develop a comprehensive understanding of AI’s capabilities, limitations, and ethical implications. This knowledge enables them to ask the right questions, challenge assumptions, and provide meaningful guidance to management teams. Without this literacy, boards risk approving AI initiatives without fully grasping their implications or missing out on transformative opportunities that could propel their organisations forward. The stakes are high for African businesses. AI has the potential to address some of the continent’s most pressing challenges, from improving healthcare access to optimising agricultural productivity. However, it also brings risks such as data privacy concerns, algorithmic bias, and potential job displacement. AI-literate boards are better equipped to navigate these complex issues, ensuring that AI adoption aligns with organisational values and societal needs. Moreover, AI literacy empowers boards to foster a culture of innovation within their organisations. By understanding AI’s potential, board members can encourage management to explore cutting-edge solutions and allocate resources to promising AI initiatives. This forward-thinking approach is crucial for African businesses to stay ahead in an increasingly competitive global market. The path to AI literacy for African boards requires a multifaceted approach. Board members should prioritise ongoing education about AI technologies and their applications in business. This can involve attending workshops, engaging with AI experts, and even experiencing AI tools firsthand. Some organisations are already taking steps in this direction, with 8% of respondents in the Deloitte survey indicating that they are starting to include AI specialists among their new board directors. However, education alone is not sufficient. Boards must establish robust oversight mechanisms to ensure that AI adoption aligns with the organisation’s strategic priorities. This includes setting clear governance frameworks for AI-related initiatives, evaluating their alignment with goals such as enhancing productivity and efficiency, improving customer experience, and fostering innovation. By focusing on strategy and accountability, boards can ensure that AI delivers measurable value while safeguarding the organisation’s long-term vision and ethical standards.. Risk management is another critical aspect of AI governance that demands board attention. African boards must establish robust frameworks for assessing and mitigating AI-related risks. This includes addressing data privacy concerns, ensuring algorithmic fairness, and preparing for potential cybersecurity threats. Boards should also consider the broader societal implications of AI adoption, such as its impact on employment and social equity. To effectively oversee AI initiatives, boards need to define clear governance structures. This may involve creating dedicated AI committees or integrating AI oversight into existing committee responsibilities. Many boards that have delegated AI matters typically assign them to the risk and regulatory committee or the audit committee. African boards should carefully consider which structure best suits their organisation’s needs to ensure comprehensive AI governance. As AI becomes more pervasive, boards must also broaden their stakeholder considerations. While customers and employees are currently seen as the top stakeholders in AI governance, African boards should anticipate increased scrutiny from regulators, investors, and society at large. Proactively engaging with these stakeholders and addressing their concerns will be crucial for maintaining trust and social license to operate in an AI-driven future. The journey towards AI literacy and effective governance is not without challenges. Many African organisations face resource constraints and may struggle to attract AI talent. However, these obstacles make it even more imperative for boards to lead the charge in AI adoption and governance. By prioritising AI literacy and oversight, boards can help their organisations overcome these hurdles and unlock the transformative potential of AI. In conclusion, AI literacy is non-negotiable for African boards aspiring to lead their organisations into the future. It is the key to unlocking innovation, managing risks, and ensuring responsible AI adoption. As AI continues to reshape the business landscape, African boards must rise to the challenge, embracing AI literacy as a fundamental leadership competency. By doing so, they will position their organisations – and the continent as a whole – to thrive in the AI-driven economy of the future.

Taylor Swift & Travis Kelce Gift Chris Jones & His Girlfriend on ChristmasTwo Maryland politicians are being considered to become the next chair of the Democratic National Committee, vying to lead a political party that is rebuilding after November losses in the White House and both chambers of Congress. Former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley and nonprofit executive-turned Senate hopeful Robert Houton are on the increasingly long list of candidates vying to lead the DNC following its Feb. 1 election to replace outgoing Chair Jaime Harrison. Author and former presidential candidate Marianne Williamson was the latest competitor to launch her bid Thursday . O’Malley, Houton and Williamson represent wildly different political figures and are reflective of the growing list of DNC chair candidates. The field also includes Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party chair Ken Martin and Wisconsin Democratic Party chair Ben Wikler. O’Malley, who served as mayor of Baltimore from 1999 to 2007 before becoming governor and launching a failed presidential bid in 2016, has chalked up the party’s 2024 defeat to its leaders growing out of touch with everyday Americans on “kitchen table” issues such as the economy. He has touted his record as chair of the Democratic Governors Association — which he did while in Annapolis from 2011 to 2012 — and repeatedly called for rejecting “the politics of fear.” “It’s time to get back to the party of FDR. The party that says there is nothing to fear but fear itself,” O’Malley wrote on X/Twitter Dec. 5 upon announcing his bid. O’Malley has received endorsements from both of Maryland’s incumbent senators, Ben Cardin and Chris Van Hollen, as well as Senate-elect Angela Alsobrooks. Houton has a more colorful recent political history. A relative unknown from Bethesda, he campaigned on tackling opioid abuse in Maryland’s 2024 Democratic Senate primary but garnered less than 2,000 votes — just 0.29% — of the vote in Maryland’s 2024 Democratic Senate primary, a race dominated by eventual Senate-elect Alsobrooks and Rep. David Trone. Despite hoping to become the party’s nominee against former GOP Gov. Larry Hogan, Houton ultimately endorsed Hogan in October while calling out Alsobrooks for what he called a campaign based on “lying, fear-mongering, name-calling and blame-gaming.” Thus far, Houton has not received the endorsement of any Maryland big wigs, but still has time to campaign before the party selects its new chair during its annual winter meeting in National Harbor, Prince George’s County. The ultimate choice for DNC chair will be tasked with rebuilding a party in the political wilderness — Republicans will hold a trifecta in the 119th Congress — amidst criticisms it has lost sight of pivotal working-class voters. ©2024 The Baltimore Sun. Chelsea’s surprise defeat at home to Fulham earlier in the day had been an unexpected gift for Arne Slot’s side and they drove home their advantage by outclassing the struggling Foxes. Having overcome the early setback of conceding to Jordan Ayew, with even the travelling fans expressing their surprise they were winning away after taking just five points on the road this season, the home team had too much quality. That was personified by the excellent Cody Gakpo, whose eighth goal in his last 14 appearances produced the equaliser in first-half added time with the Netherlands international unlucky to have a second ruled out for offside by VAR. Further goals from Curtis Jones and Mohamed Salah, with his 19th of the season, stretched Liverpool’s unbeaten run to 22 matches. For Leicester, who had slipped into the bottom three after Wolves’ win over Manchester United, it is now one win from the last 10 in the league and Ruud van Nistelrooy has plenty of work to do, although he was not helped here by the absence of leading scorer Jamie Vardy through injury. It looked liked Liverpool meant business from the off with Salah’s volley from Gakpo’s far-post cross just being kept out by Jakub Stolarczyk, making his league debut after former Liverpool goalkeeper Danny Ward was omitted from the squad having struggled in the defeat to Wolves. But if the hosts thought that had set the tone they were badly mistaken after being opened up with such simplicity in only the sixth minute. Stephy Mavididi broke down the left and his low cross picked out Ayew, who turned Andy Robertson far too easily, with his shot deflecting off Virgil van Dijk to take it just out of Alisson Becker’s reach. With a surprise lead to cling to Leicester knew they had to quell the storm heading their way and they began by trying to take as much time out of the game as they could, much to Anfield’s frustration. It took a further 18 minutes for Liverpool to threaten with Gakpo cutting in from the left to fire over, a precursor for what was to follow just before half-time. That was the prompt for the attacks to rain down on the Foxes goal, with Salah’s shot looping up off Victor Kristiansen and landing on the roof of the net and Robertson heading against a post. Gakpo’s inclination to come in off the left was proving a problem for the visitors, doing their utmost to resist the pressure, but when Salah curled a shot onto the crossbar on the stroke of half-time it appeared they had survived. However, Gakpo once again drifted in off the flank to collect an Alexis Mac Allister pass before curling what is fast becoming his trademark effort over Stolarczyk and inside the far post. Early the second half Darwin Nunez fired over Ryan Gravenberch’s cross before Jones side-footed home Mac Allister’s cross after an intricate passing move inside the penalty area involving Nunez, Salah and the Argentina international. Leicester’s ambition remained limited but Patson Daka should have done better from a two-on-one counter attack with Mavididi but completely missed his kick with the goal looming. Nunez forced a save out of the goalkeeper before Gakpo blasted home what he thought was his second only for VAR to rule Nunez was offside in the build-up. But Liverpool’s third was eventually delivered by the left foot of Salah, who curled the ball outside Kristiansen, inside Jannick Vestergaard and past Stolarczyk inside the far post.Ricky Gervais mocks Roy Keane after joining Neville and Carragher on The Overlap

Human footfall has been reduced in pockets of Rehmankheda where a tiger was spotted in the past 72 hours while a bait and watch tower are in place to allow the big cat to approach the trap laid by forest department. “The plan is simple. Allow tiger to reach the bait so that it could be tranquillised,” said Sitanshu Pandey, divisional forest officer of Awadh range. “This could take a day or two. Reduction in human intervention is needed to make the tiger comfortable to walk towards the bait. “There are two cages while one bait is in the open field under watch by one of the tranquillising team. The other team is at tree house,” he added. “The aim is to tranquillise the tiger in the next two or three days,” said Pandey on Sunday. “The tiger is under search by forest staff since December 14. It has killed a blue bull but has not attacked human. Hence, the plan is to leave the wild cat in forest after rescue operation,” he added. Meanwhile, chief conservator of forest Renu Singh visited Rehmankheda and took stock of the preparations during the day. The forest officer said a team from Kanpur zoo has come with net, transportation cage, related vehicle and other equipment to conduct rescue operation. “The team is looking for a proper place where the tiger can be cornered before being rescued. Once the team is able to corner the tiger, assess its health and general condition only then a decision on rescue operation will be taken,” he added. “Tranquilliser will be used once we prepare a final plan for rescue operation,” Pandey said.Telehealth companies and other industry stakeholders have had a watchful eye towards the end of 2024 and the impending “telehealth cliff” as COVID-era Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) flexibilities and Medicare expanded telehealth coverage are set to expire. Although a recent temporary joint rule from the DEA and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) along with the 2025 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule final rule has provided some hope, questions regarding telehealth access in 2025 and under a new Administration remain unclear. Further, calls continue for increased oversight of telehealth services. Below, we breakdown recent updates for the telehealth industry. DEA Telehealth Flexibilities Providing some good news, late last month the DEA and HHS jointly issued a temporary rule (the Temporary Rule) extending the COVID-era flexibilities for prescribing controlled substances via telehealth through the end of 2025. The flexibilities, which previously were twice extended and set to expire December 31, 2024, temporarily waive the in-person requirements for prescribing under the Controlled Substances Act. The DEA and HHS issued the Temporary Rule to ensure that providers and patients who have come to rely on telehealth services are able to smoothly transition to the new requirements, which as previously covered , are likely to significantly limit providers’ ability to prescribe controlled substances without an in-person interaction. The Temporary Rule also acknowledges that the DEA and HHS continue to work with relevant stakeholders and will use the additional time to promulgate proposed and final regulations that “effectively expand access to telemedicine” in a manner that is consistent with public health and safety, while mitigating the risk of diversion. The agencies also note that the limited time period of the extension is aimed at avoiding investment in new telemedicine companies that may encourage or enable problematic prescribing practices. The Temporary Rule effectively allows all DEA-registered providers to prescribe Schedule II-V controlled substances via telehealth through the end of 2025, regardless of when the provider-patient relationship was formed. Consistent with the prior temporary rules, the following requirements continue to apply: The prescription must be issued for a legitimate medical purpose by a practitioner acting in the usual course of professional practice. The prescription must be issued pursuant to a telehealth interaction using two-way, real-time audio-visual technology, or for prescriptions to treat a mental health disorder, a two-way, real-time audio-only communication if the patient is not capable of, or does not consent to, the use of video technology. The practitioner must be authorized under their DEA registration to prescribe the basic class of controlled medication specified on the prescription or be exempt from obtaining a registration to dispense controlled substances. The prescription must meet all other requirements of the DEA regulations. Providers should also be cognizant of applicable state laws that may place additional restrictions on the ability to prescribe certain medications or otherwise provide treatment via telehealth. Medicare Coverage of Telehealth Services Unlike the DEA flexibilities, many of the COVID-era flexibilities for traditional Medicare coverage of telehealth services will end on December 31, 2024. Despite bipartisan support, congressional action is required to extend broad coverage for certain telehealth services existing since March 2020. Most notably, unless Congress acts, beginning January 1, 2025 expiring flexibilities include waiving the originating site requirements to allow beneficiaries to receive services in their homes and expanding the list of Medicare-enrolled providers who can furnish telehealth services. Further, beginning January 1, 2025, Medicare coverage of telehealth services for beneficiaries outside of rural health care settings will be limited to: Monthly End-Stage Renal Disease visits for home dialysis; Services for diagnosis, evaluation, or treatment of symptoms of an acute stroke; Treatment of substance use disorder or a co-occurring mental health disorder, or for the diagnosis, evaluation or treatment of a mental health disorder; Behavioral health services; Diabetes self-management training; and Nutrition therapy. For its part, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) recently issued its 2025 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule Final Rule (the MPFS Final Rule) extending and making permanent certain telehealth flexibilities within its authority. In particular, through December 31, 2025, practitioners may continue to utilize live video to meet certain Medicare direct supervision requirements and reference their currently enrolled practice when providing telehealth services from their home. The MPFS Final Rule continues to remove frequency limitations for certain hospital inpatient/observation care, skilled nursing facility visits, and critical care consultation services furnished via telehealth. Additionally, the MPFS Final Rule makes permanent the utilization of audio-only telehealth for any Medicare-covered telehealth service. Increased Telehealth Oversight Recent months also have seen renewed calls for increased oversight of telehealth services. In September, the HHS Office for Inspector General (OIG) issued a report (the OIG Report) recommending increased oversight of Medicare coverage of remote patient monitoring. As a basis for its findings, the OIG Report cites the dramatic increased utilization of and payments for remote patient monitoring from 2019 to 2022, the fact that over 40% of Medicare beneficiaries receiving remote patient monitoring did not receive all three components of the service (i.e., education and setup, device supply, and treatment management), and the observation that Medicare lacks key information regarding the data being collected and the types of monitoring devices utilized. Notably, OIG conducted its review in part because of the potential for significant expansion of remote patient monitoring in the Medicare population. Given these factors, the OIG Report recommends that CMS: Separately, concerns also have been raised regarding the recent emergence of direct-to-consumer telehealth platforms sponsored by pharmaceutical companies. In this model, patients seeking specific medications are linked to a health care provider who can virtually prescribe the requested medication. In October, U.S. Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL), joined by Senators Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Peter Welch (D-VT), and Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) sent letters to several pharmaceutical companies requesting written response to questions regarding these platforms including the cost of direct-to-consumer advertising, the arrangements between the telehealth providers and the pharmaceutical companies, and whether the virtual consultation comply with the standard of care. Conclusion Despite attempts to preserve and expand telehealth access and affordability, effective January 1, 2025, many Medicare beneficiaries will be cut off from certain telehealth services unless one of the bills currently pending in Congress is passed. Crucially, bipartisan support for increased access to telehealth services is likely to continue in both chambers of Congress. Although the incoming Administration has not detailed its plans regarding telehealth access on a permanent, or even temporary basis, telehealth will continue to play an important role in the United States health care system through 2025 and beyond. As telehealth continues to play an important role in increasing access to care, increased oversight and enforcement is almost certain, even if future oversight priorities are unclear. As always, we will continue to monitor and report on important telehealth developments.lucky cola official website

CLEVELAND (AP) — Shortly after doing a face-down snow angel, firing a few celebratory snowballs and singing “Jingle Bells” on his way to the media room, Jameis Winston ended his postgame news conference with a simple question. “Am I a Brown yet?” he asked. He is now. And who knows? Maybe for a lot longer than expected. Winston entered Cleveland football folklore on Thursday night by leading the Browns to a 24-19 win over the division rival Pittsburgh Steelers, who had their five-game winning streak stopped. Winston's performance at Huntington Bank Field, which transformed into the world's largest snow globe, not only made him an instantaneous hero in the eyes of Browns fans but added another wrinkle to the team's ever-changing, never-ending quarterback conundrum. In his fourth start since Deshaun Watson's season-ending Achilles tendon injury, Winston made enough big plays to help the Browns (3-8) get a victory that should quiet conjecture about coach Kevin Stefanski's job. Some wins mean more than others. In Cleveland, beating the Steelers is as big as it gets. But beyond any instant gratification, Winston has given the Browns more to consider as they move forward. Watson's future with Cleveland is highly uncertain since it will still be months before the team has a grip on whether he's even an option in 2025, his fourth year since signing a $230 million, fully guaranteed contract that has proven calamitous. It's also possible the Browns will cut ties with Watson. They signed Winston to a one-year contract to be Watson's backup. But the unexpected events of 2024 have changed plans and led to the possibility that the 30-year-old Winston could become Cleveland's full-time QB or a bridge to their next young one. So much is unclear. What's not is that Winston, who leaped into the end zone on fourth-and-2 for a TD to put the Browns ahead 18-6 in the fourth quarter, is a difference maker. With his larger-than-life personality and the joy he shows whether practicing or throwing three touchdown passes, he has lifted the Browns. A man of faith, he's made his teammates believe. Winston has done what Watson couldn't: made the Browns better. “A very, very authentic person,” Stefanski said Friday on a Zoom call. “He’s the same guy every single day. He's the same guy at 5 a.m. as he at 5 p.m. He brings great energy to everything he does, and I think his teammates appreciate that about him.” Winston, who is 2-2 as a starter with wins over the Steelers and Baltimore Ravens, has a knack for inspiring through fiery, preacher-like pregame speeches. But what has impressed the Browns is his ability to stay calm in the storm. “He doesn’t get rattled,” said Myles Garrett, who had three sacks against the Steelers . “He’s just tuned in and focused as anyone I’ve seen at that position. Turn the page. There was a turnover, came back to the sideline, ‘Love you. I’m sorry. We’re going to get it back.’ He was already on to the next one, ‘How can we complete the mission?’ “I have a lot of respect for him. First was from afar and now seeing it on the field in front of me, it’s a blessing to have someone who plays a game with such a passion and want-to. You can’t ask for a better teammate when they take those things to heart and they want to play for you like we’re actually brothers and that’s what we have to attain. That brotherhood.” What's working Winston has done something else Watson couldn't: move the offense. The Browns scored more than 20 points for just the second time this season, and like Joe Flacco a year ago, Winston has shown that Stefanski's system works with a quarterback patient enough to let plays develop and unafraid to take shots downfield. What needs help The conditions certainly were a factor, but the Browns were a miserable 1 of 10 on third down, a season-long trend. However, Cleveland converted all four fourth-down tries, including a fourth-and-3 pass from Winston to Jerry Jeudy with 2:36 left that helped set up Nick Chubb's go-ahead TD run. Stock up RT Jack Conklin. Garrett outplayed Steelers star T.J. Watt in their rivalry within the rivalry partly because Conklin did a nice job containing Pittsburgh's edge rusher, who was held without a sack and had one tackle for loss. Conklin has made a remarkable comeback since undergoing reconstructive knee surgery last year. Stock down Owners Dee and Jimmy Haslam. Their desire to build a dome is well intended, but an indoor game could never come close to matching the surreal setting of Thursday night, when snow swirled throughout the stadium and covered nearly all the yard lines and hash marks. “It was beautiful,” Winston said. Injuries WR Cedric Tillman is in the concussion protocol. He had two catches before taking a big hit on the final play of the third quarter. Key numbers 9 — Consecutive home wins for the Browns in Thursday night games. Three of those have come against Pittsburgh. What's next An extended break before visiting the Denver Broncos on Dec. 2. Unity against violence in Vélez MálagaFianna Fail and Fine Gael eye independent TDs as option to secure Dail majorityDENVER — So you're the most valuable player of that annual Thanksgiving Day backyard flag football game. Or played tackle football on any level. Or ran track. Or dabbled in basketball. Or toyed with any sport, really. Well, this may be just for you: USA Football is holding talent identification camps all over the country to find that next flag football star. It's "America's Got Talent" meets "American Idol," with the stage being the field and the grand prize a chance to compete for a spot on a national team. Because it's never too early to start planning for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, where flag football will make its Summer Games debut. Know this, though — it's not an easy team to make. The men's and women's national team rosters are at "Dream Team" status given the men's side has captured six of the last seven world championships and the women three in a row. To remain on top, the sport's national governing body is scouring every football field, park, track, basketball court and gym to find hidden talent to cultivate. USA Football has organized camps and tryouts from coast to coast for anyone ages 11 to 23. There are more than a dozen sites set up so far, ranging from Dallas (Sunday) to Chicago (Dec. 14) to Tampa (March 29) to Los Angeles (TBD) and the Boston area (April 27), where it will be held at Gillette Stadium, home of the New England Patriots. The organization has already partnered with the NFL on flag football initiatives and programs. The numbers have been through the roof, with engagement on social media platforms increasing by 86% since flag football was announced as an Olympic invitational sport in October 2023. The participation of boys and girls ages 6 to 17 in flag football last year peaked at more than 1.6 million, according to USA Football research. "We pride ourselves on elevating the gold standard across the sport," said Eric Mayes, the managing director of the high performance and national teams for USA Football. "We want to be the best in the world — and stay the best in the world." Flag football was one of five new sports added to the LA28 program. The already soaring profile of American football only figures to be enhanced by an Olympic appearance. Imagine, say, a few familiar faces take the field, too. Perhaps even NFL stars such as Tyreek Hill or Patrick Mahomes, maybe even past pro football greats donning a flag belt for a country to which they may have ties. Soon after flag football's inclusion, there was chatter of NFL players possibly joining in on the fun. Of course, there are logistical issues to tackle before their inclusion at the LA Olympics, which open July 14, 2028. Among them, training camp, because the Olympics will be right in the middle of it. The big question is this: Will owners permit high-priced players to duck out for a gold-medal pursuit? No decisions have yet been made on the status of NFL players for the Olympics. For now, it's simply about growing the game. There are currently 13 states that sanction girls flag football as a high school varsity sport. Just recently, the Pittsburgh Steelers and Philadelphia Eagles helped pave the way to get it adopted in Pennsylvania. Around the world, it's catching on, too. The women's team from Japan took third at the recent word championships, while one of the best players on the planet is Mexico quarterback Diana Flores. "Could flag football globally become the new soccer? That's something to aspire to," said Stephanie Kwok, the NFL's vice president of flag football. This type of flag football though, isn't your Thanksgiving Day game with family and friends. There's a learning curve. And given the small roster sizes, versatility is essential. Most national team members need to be a version of Colorado's two-way standout and Heisman hopeful Travis Hunter. Forget bump-and-run coverage, too, because there's no contact. None. That took some adjusting for Mike Daniels, a defensive back out of West Virginia who earned a rookie minicamp invitation with the Cleveland Browns in 2017. "If a receiver is running around, I'm thinking, 'OK, I can kind of bump him here and there and nudge him,'" Daniels explained. "They're like, 'No, you can't.' I'm just like, 'So I'm supposed to let this guy just run?!' I really rebelled at the idea at first. But you learn." The competition for an Olympic roster spot is going to be fierce because only 10 players are expected to make a squad. The best 10 will earn it, too, as credentials such as college All-American or NFL All-Pro take a backseat. "I would actually love" seeing NFL players try out, said Daniels, who's also a personal trainer in Miami. "I'm not going to let you just waltz in here, thinking, 'I played NFL football for five years. I'm popular. I have a huge name.' I'm still better than you and I'm going to prove it — until you prove otherwise." Around the house, Bruce Mapp constantly swivels his hips when turning a hallway corner or if his daughter tries to reach for a hug. It's his way of working on avoiding a "defender" trying to snare the flag. That approach has earned the receiver out of Coastal Carolina four gold medals with USA Football. The 31-year-old fully plans on going for more gold in Los Angeles. "You grow up watching Usain Bolt (win gold) and the 'Redeem Team' led by Kobe Bryant win a gold medal, you're always thinking, 'That's insane.' Obviously, you couldn't do it in your sport, because I played football," said Mapp, who owns a food truck in the Dallas area. "With the Olympics approaching, that (gold medal) is what my mind is set on." It's a common thought, which is why everything — including talent camps — starts now. "Everybody thinks, 'Yeah, the U.S. just wins,'" Daniels said. "But we work hard all the time. We don't just walk in. We don't just get off the bus thinking, 'We're going to beat people.'" By MICHELLE L. PRICE WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — An online spat between factions of Donald Trump’s supporters over immigration and the tech industry has thrown internal divisions in his political movement into public display, previewing the fissures and contradictory views his coalition could bring to the White House. The rift laid bare the tensions between the newest flank of Trump’s movement — wealthy members of the tech world including billionaire Elon Musk and fellow entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy and their call for more highly skilled workers in their industry — and people in Trump’s Make America Great Again base who championed his hardline immigration policies. The debate touched off this week when Laura Loomer , a right-wing provocateur with a history of racist and conspiratorial comments, criticized Trump’s selection of Sriram Krishnan as an adviser on artificial intelligence policy in his coming administration. Krishnan favors the ability to bring more skilled immigrants into the U.S. Loomer declared the stance to be “not America First policy” and said the tech executives who have aligned themselves with Trump were doing so to enrich themselves. Much of the debate played out on the social media network X, which Musk owns. Loomer’s comments sparked a back-and-forth with venture capitalist and former PayPal executive David Sacks , whom Trump has tapped to be the “White House A.I. & Crypto Czar.” Musk and Ramaswamy, whom Trump has tasked with finding ways to cut the federal government , weighed in, defending the tech industry’s need to bring in foreign workers. It bloomed into a larger debate with more figures from the hard-right weighing in about the need to hire U.S. workers, whether values in American culture can produce the best engineers, free speech on the internet, the newfound influence tech figures have in Trump’s world and what his political movement stands for. Trump has not yet weighed in on the rift, and his presidential transition team did not respond to a message seeking comment. Musk, the world’s richest man who has grown remarkably close to the president-elect , was a central figure in the debate, not only for his stature in Trump’s movement but his stance on the tech industry’s hiring of foreign workers. Technology companies say H-1B visas for skilled workers, used by software engineers and others in the tech industry, are critical for hard-to-fill positions. But critics have said they undercut U.S. citizens who could take those jobs. Some on the right have called for the program to be eliminated, not expanded. Born in South Africa, Musk was once on an a H-1B visa himself and defended the industry’s need to bring in foreign workers. “There is a permanent shortage of excellent engineering talent,” he said in a post. “It is the fundamental limiting factor in Silicon Valley.” Related Articles National Politics | Should the U.S. increase immigration levels for highly skilled workers? His tough immigration policies, including his pledge for a mass deportation, were central to his winning presidential campaign. He has focused on immigrants who come into the U.S. illegally but he has also sought curbs on legal immigration , including family-based visas. As a presidential candidate in 2016, Trump called the H-1B visa program “very bad” and “unfair” for U.S. workers. After he became president, Trump in 2017 issued a “Buy American and Hire American” executive order , which directed Cabinet members to suggest changes to ensure H-1B visas were awarded to the highest-paid or most-skilled applicants to protect American workers. Trump’s businesses, however, have hired foreign workers, including waiters and cooks at his Mar-a-Lago club , and his social media company behind his Truth Social app has used the the H-1B program for highly skilled workers. During his 2024 campaign for president, as he made immigration his signature issue, Trump said immigrants in the country illegally are “poisoning the blood of our country” and promised to carry out the largest deportation operation in U.S. history. But in a sharp departure from his usual alarmist message around immigration generally, Trump told a podcast this year that he wants to give automatic green cards to foreign students who graduate from U.S. colleges. “I think you should get automatically, as part of your diploma, a green card to be able to stay in this country,” he told the “All-In” podcast with people from the venture capital and technology world. Those comments came on the cusp of Trump’s budding alliance with tech industry figures, but he did not make the idea a regular part of his campaign message or detail any plans to pursue such changes. The French government appears but certain to collapse later this week after far-right and left-wing parties submitted no-confidence motions on Monday against Prime Minister Michel Barnier. Investors immediately punished French assets as the latest developments plunged the eurozone's second-biggest economy deeper into political crisis, with serious doubt cast over whether the annual budget will be approved. "The French have had enough," Marine Le Pen of the far-right National Rally (RN) told reporters in parliament, saying Barnier, who only became prime minister in early September, had made things worse and needed to be pushed out. "We are proposing a motion of no confidence against the government," she said. Barring a last-minute surprise, Barnier's fragile coalition will be the first French government to be forced out by a no-confidence vote since 1962. RN supports both no-confidence bills RN lawmakers and the left combined have enough votes to topple Barnier, and Le Pen confirmed her party would vote for the left-wing coalition's no-confidence bill on top of the RN's own bill. That vote is likely to be held on Wednesday. Marine Le Pen of the far-right National Rally smiles while in France's National Assembly on Monday. (Michel Euler/The Associated Press) The parties announced their no-confidence motions after Barnier said earlier on Monday that he would try to ram a social security bill through parliament without a vote, as a last-minute concession proved insufficient to win RN's support for the legislation. "Faced with this umpteenth denial of democracy, we will censure the government," said Mathilde Panot of the left-wing France Unbowed. "We are living in political chaos because of Michel Barnier's government and Emmanuel Macron's presidency." France's Macron says leaders shouldn't 'abandon their values' in the face of bad polls The spread between French bonds and the German benchmark widened further and a sell-off in the euro gathered pace. Since Macron called snap elections in early June , France's CAC 40 stock index has dropped nearly 10 per cent. It closed flat on Monday after dropping over one per cent earlier in the day. 'We are at a moment of truth' Barnier urged lawmakers not to back the no-confidence vote. WATCH | Unsetlled political climate after French election: Election results put France in political limbo 5 months ago Duration 2:49 A leftist coalition won the most seats in France’s parliamentary election, but it fell short of a minority. Now, the country has no dominant political bloc, creating uncertainty around what the next government will look like. "We are at a moment of truth.... The French will not forgive us for putting the interests of individuals before the future of the country," he said as he put his government's fate in the hands of the divided parliament which was the result of an inconclusive snap election Macron called in June. Barnier's minority government had relied on RN support for its survival. The budget bill, which seeks to rein in France's spiraling public deficit through 60 billion euros (about $88.5 billion Cdn) in tax hikes and spending cuts, snapped that tenuous link. Barnier's entourage and Le Pen's camp each blamed the other and said they had done all they could to reach a deal and had been open to dialogue. Analysis Macron's election gamble may have blocked the far right. But it didn't dim its appeal A source close to Barnier said the prime minister had made major concessions to Le Pen and that voting to bring down the government would mean losing those gains. "Is she ready to sacrifice all the wins she got?" the source told Reuters. No snap elections before July If the no-confidence vote does indeed go through, Barnier would have to tender his resignation but Macron may ask him and his government to stay on in a caretaker role to handle day-to-day business while he seeks a new prime minister, which could well happen only next year. French President Emmanuel Macron — shown above at a recent press conference — will have to consider his options if the government led by Prime Minister Barnier collapses as a result of a pair of non-confidence motions it is facing. (Sarah Meyssonnier/AFP/Getty Images) One option would be for Macron to name a government of technocrats with no political program, hoping that could help survive a no-confidence vote. In any case, there can be no new snap parliamentary elections before July. As far as the budget is concerned, if parliament has not adopted it by Dec. 20, the caretaker government could invoke constitutional powers to pass it by ordinance. French election sees leftists gain, far right slide and a hung parliament However, that would be risky as there is a legal grey area about whether a caretaker government can use such powers. And that would be sure to trigger uproar from the opposition. A more likely move would be for the caretaker government to propose special emergency legislation to roll over spending limits and tax provisions from this year. But that would mean that savings measures Barnier had planned would fall by the wayside.

On September 25, coaches with the Gabriola Soccer Association made a presentation to the Nanaimo-Ladysmith School District Board, requesting an increase in access to the sports field at Gabriola Elementary school Field. On Oct. 9, the Nanaimo Ladysmith School Board received a report from NLPS staff that was discussed at the meeting. The report does not recommend an increase in usage, and states the field will be closed again this year to community groups for the winter. The report - prepared by Mark Walsh, Secretary-Treasurer - states that the district’s main focus with the sports field is to provide an outdoor learning space for its students, as well as working collaboratively with the public and community for extra curricular activities. Walsh says the District has implemented a strategy with limitations to meet both focuses that will - in their eyes - allow the field to have optimal use and not have to be closed as it was last year. The district has agreed to the field being rented and used by the soccer association three days a week, this allows for two practice days and a game day on Sundays for the Gabriola rep team. The other three Gabriola teams, who play games on Saturdays, are still playing their ‘home’ games on fields in Nanaimo. The report cites the limits in the strategy were put in place to allow for the field to have an opportunity to ‘recover’ from use and to provide time for staff to maintain and mow. According to Walsh, in the past, over-use has made the field condition nonoptimal, to the point of closure, and has led to an increase in maintenance and operating costs. The sports field is expected to be closed to recreational activities outside of school hours during winter months, as the weather is not conducive to grass growing/repair, causing significant damage to the field and major maintenance budget and labor requirements in spring. The report states that with previous closure the field was brought up to excellent condition - but is already showing sighs of wear and tear into September. This was referenced during the Oct. 9 meeting by Kelsey Bakewell, Maintenance Manager, and Walsh. Both were questioned by board members about the option of allowing more usage by Gabriola residents. The response from Bakewell and Walsh was that it comes down to the fact that the field has a use capacity threshold that will not meet the demand being asked for, and that the field will need the time to regenerate. When posed the question of extra funding being made available to facilitate usage Mark Walsh responded with, “if the board did have additional funding, I would suggest that our first priority would not necessarily be increasing the usability for user groups on Gabriola.” He said there are a number of serious maintenance deficits in a variety of the District sites has. “We have dangerous trees we need to find funding for to be able to take down. I want to put that into context.”

US Navy’s next-gen jammer to disrupt air defenses completes first historic deploymentNew putting grip, same old Scottie Scheffler. The World No. 1 shot a blazing 9-under-par 63 on Sunday to repeat at the Hero World Challenge, winning by six shots over South Korea's Tom Kim at Albany Golf Course in Nassau, Bahamas. Scheffler rolled in nine birdie putts, the longest a 49-footer at the par-4 fourth hole, as he finished the week at 25-under-par 263 to win Tiger Woods' exclusive exhibition tournament for the second straight December. He stuck his approach shot at the par-4 18th inside 4 feet and finished up with a birdie. Scheffler completed a banner year in which he won The Players Championship, the Masters, an Olympic gold medal and the Tour Championship. "I think it's been a great year, it's been a fun year," Scheffler said. "I've been fortunate to get some wins and have some really good golf. This was another week when I played really solid and was able to see some nice results from that. Overall it was a pretty, pretty fun year." That said, he wasn't satisfied with his game and debuted a new putting grip that he said was introduced to him by his putting coach, Phil Kenyon. "I think Phil calls it a claw, but he really doesn't even say that," Scheffler said Thursday. "He just says ‘I want you to try a little bit' and he points his hand like that and wherever my hand felt good, that's where we settled. Not trying to think too much about it, trying to keep things simple." Scheffler held the 36-hole lead but was passed by Justin Thomas on Saturday. Thomas had an uneven fourth round for his highest score of the week, a 71 (five birdies, four bogeys), and he finished third at 18 under, seven behind Scheffler and one behind Kim (final-round 68). "It's just disappointing," said Thomas, who hasn't won a tournament of any kind since the 2022 PGA Championship. "I would have liked to put a little more heat obviously on Scottie going in the back nine. You know, I felt like I got a couple bad breaks there on the par 3s, the wind completely died or switched on five. But I mean, you know, obviously I can't expect to have good things happen when I'm leading by 1 over Scottie and only shooting 1 under on Sunday." Akshay Bhatia (69) placed fourth at 15 under and U.S. Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley (71) took fifth at 14 under. Other notable finishes included Sweden's Ludvig Aberg in sixth at 12 under; Patrick Cantlay in 11th at 7 under; Brian Harman in 12th at 6 under; and Australian Jason Day tied for 19th (last) at 1 over with Russell Henley. Woods did not play this week, saying before the tournament his health is "still not there" and he is not "tournament-sharp" at the moment. For leftist SYRIZA, the real challenge now lies ahead. We don’t mean the likelihood of more MPs defecting from its parliamentary group or the fact that the ill-mannered Pavlos Polakis came second in Sunday’s party leadership race with a stunning 43% that established him as the de facto voice of the opposition within the party. The challenges that lie ahead go a long way back. What’s left of SYRIZA will have to confront the past of a party that had its moment in the sun – in whichever way that was – and the fundamental questions that challenge the left globally. Who are they? Where are they headed? What is their message? How do they address the core contradictions that led the movement to disrepute and the party to such fragmentation? Self-criticism is the first thing that is required, for both tactical and essential reasons. Any initiative to bring the country’s “progressive forces” together, as SYRIZA has been touting for years, demands that it first heal the wounds it inflicted. There are many in center-left PASOK who will not soon forget how they were slandered and attacked – literally, too – by the clamorous hordes of SYRIZA when the leftists finally got their turn at the helm of government. The essential reasons are more important. There are many in SYRIZA who pine for those times of sheer audacity that led to the party’s pyrrhic victory in 2015 – hence Polakis’ 43%. But hooligan tactics do not build solid foundations or formulate propositions that can stand the test of time. Political parties need to develop deep roots in society instead of tapping into its most base and fickle instincts. Beyond the challenges it faces in Greece, the left is also in very poor shape globally. It is almost impressive how badly it’s doing, given that capitalism is coming under such serious fire. Workers everywhere are expressing their opposition to the system that is making them poorer by voting for the far-right. The left’s decline is bolstering its rivals, like Donald Trump, and empowering the representatives of big capital, like Elon Musk. Worldwide, the left is starting to look outdated or at least disconnected from society’s concerns and hopes, and, above all, from the social classes it seeks to represent. We obviously don’t expect Sokratis Famellos, as SYRIZA’s new leader, to solve the global problems of the left – we hardly expect him to solve the domestic ones. But we do hope that he initiates a bold dialogue about the problems besetting the left, a dialogue with something more meaningful to propose rather than “out with the Mitsotakis government.” Let’s not forget that it was this kind of thinking which took SYRIZA into what was one of the worst periods of its history – when Stefanos Kasselakis thought he had what it takes to bring down Kyriakos Mitsotakis.( MENAFN - GetNews) In today's fast-paced digital environment, businesses are constantly seeking innovative solutions to efficiently manage data. Arjuna and Vijay on Friday attended the launch of a book on BR Ambedkar, while VCK founder-chief Thol Thirumavalavan decided to give the event a miss. Thirumavalavan said that the party held a meeting on Sunday to discuss Arjuna’s speech. “Senior leaders believe his act at the event affects our party. In a day or two, we will announce our decision regarding that... I am clear that it is not appropriate to speak against our alliance partner,” he added. At the event, Arjuna said that chief ministers must be elected by the people and it should not be a position that comes by birth in an apparent reference to late chief minister M Karunanidhi’s son MK Stalin being the current chief minister and his son Udhayanidhi being the deputy chief minister. “Monarchy exists here,” Arjuna said on Friday. “Dynasty politics must be abolished in 2026 (assembly elections).” Thirumavalavan was originally slated to take part in the launch of the book Ambedkar: Leader for AlI, co-published by Vikatan and Arjuna’s political strategy firm Voice of Commons, on Ambedkar’s death anniversary. However, the VCK chief pulled out of the event after organisers invited Vijay. The TVK chief took a jibe at the VCK leader on Friday, saying that he skipped the event due to “alliance pressure”. “VCK leader Thol Thirumavalavan could not attend the function today. I can sense the extent of alliance pressure that has prevented him from attending this function on Ambedkar’s book launch,” the actor-politician said at the event. Thirumavalavan denied the allegation, saying that he was not under any pressure. He further said that the opposition was trying to dismantle the ruling alliance, led by the DMK. VCK is also part of the opposition Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) bloc at the national level. “We have no necessity to join any new alliance. Our alliance with the DMK is strong,” the VCK MP reiterated.

Election results on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean have set the background for the final stretch of campaigning for Irish parties ahead of polling day on Friday. Donald Trump’s presidential election victory in the US has brought heightened concern that his administration’s proposals around corporation tax and tariffs would significantly impact Ireland’s economic model. Mr Harris, leader of Fine Gael, has argued Ireland and other EU countries need to prepare for the possibility of trade shocks as he criticised the scale of Sinn Fein’s spending pledges as well as their saving plans. He said: “I think that is irresponsible, I think it is dangerous and I think it is reckless.” He accused Sinn Fein leader Mary Lou McDonald of not being able to say what her party was prepared to do in the event of an economic crash, adding that Fine Gael would borrow and stop putting money towards a rainy-day fund. Asked if the party was engaging in “project fear” to dissuade voters against Sinn Fein, Mr Harris said: “I call it ‘project truth’. It’s telling people what’s being discussed right across European capitals.” Ms McDonald told an RTE interview on Wednesday morning that a Sinn Fein government would also be prepared to start borrowing in the event of an economic downturn. Both Mr Harris and Fianna Fail leader Micheal Martin, who were partners in the last coalition government in Ireland, have made clear they will not countenance Sinn Fein as a potential partner in the next administration in Dublin. One day after the only three-way debate featuring the leaders of the main parties, Mr Martin accused Sinn Fein of being “dishonest” about how they will fund their manifesto plans. Speaking in Dublin on Wednesday, he said he is anxious to get clarity on the issue. “I think Sinn Fein have been very dishonest, frankly, in terms of the funds, because if you go through their figures, and this is a matter of fact, not opinion, they’re predicting a surplus of a billion in 2026, a billion in 2027. “Even in 2025, they’re talking about a mini budget, which would mean reducing the surplus that we’re anticipating in 2025. “There’s a legislative obligation now on any new government to put 0.8% of GDP to one side, and into the funds. There’s no way you can do that with a surplus of a billion in 2026 or 2027, and we would argue they would not have enough funds next year either to put into the funds.” He added: “It means they have no room to manoeuvre if things go wrong, if there’s headwinds come externally, or there are shocks internationally, Sinn Fein is not allowing any headroom at all in terms of room to respond or to move it.” Ms McDonald accused the other two parties of conspiring to keep Sinn Fein out of government and prevent change in Ireland. She said the two men were now “indistinguishable” from each other as she claimed they were suffering “acute amnesia” in regard to their records in government. On a visit to Naas fire station in Co Kildare, she said: “To listen to them, you’d imagine they had just arrived on the scene and that they were going to come up with all of these solutions. “They have had ample chances, ample opportunity, to make things better, and they have failed, and in between the two of them I make the case that now we ask for our chance, with our plans, with our team, to demonstrate how change can happen, how your community, your family, yourself, can be supported when the government is actually on your side.” Mr Martin’s and Mr Harris’ coalition partner Roderic O’Gorman, the leader of the Greens, issued a warning to the public over a future government without his party. On Wednesday, he said it is looking likely that Fianna Fail and Fine Gael will be returned to government – but cautioned they may not want the Greens to continue “fighting hard” on policies. He told reporters: “My sense is certainly the mood music from Fianna Fail and Fine Gael is that they’d like an easier life in the next government – and my concern is they use these small populist parties and right-wing independents.” Mr O’Gorman argued that the Greens could continue to provide stability to government at a time when economic shocks may be around the corner. As the Green leader suggested that relying on independents would be unstable, Mr Martin has also argued that “too much fragmentation would lead to incoherence in government”. Reflecting on Tuesday night’s debate, the Fianna Fail leader said the race remained “too close to call” while Mr Harris said it is “all to play for”. The leaders of Ireland’s three main political parties clashed on housing, healthcare and financial management in the last televised debate before Friday’s General Election. The tetchy debate, which was marked by several interruptions, saw the parties set out their stalls in a broadcast that commentators said did little to move the dial before polling day. The latest opinion poll on Monday put the parties in a tight grouping, with Fianna Fail slightly ahead of Sinn Fein, and Fine Gael in a close third after a significant slide in a campaign marked with several hiccups for Mr Harris’s party. After the 2020 general election delivered an inconclusive result, Fine Gael and Fianna Fail, two parties forged from opposing sides of Ireland’s Civil War of the 1920s, agreed to set aside almost a century of animosity and share power – with the Greens as a junior partner. From 2016 to 2020, Fianna Fail had supported Fine Gael in power through a confidence-and-supply arrangement from the Opposition benches in the Dail parliament. Sinn Fein won the popular vote in 2020 but a failure to run enough candidates meant it did not secure sufficient seats in the Dail to give it a realistic chance of forming a government.Galaxy aim to complete journey back to top in MLS Cup finalDocusign Announces Third Quarter Fiscal 2025 Financial Results

The Last of Us Part 1 Gets Surprising New PS5 UpdateBy Molly Farrar Rachael Rollins, the former U.S. Attorney who resigned amid a federal investigation into ethical violations last year, weighed in on the public corruption charges against Boston City Councilor Tania Fernandes Anderson. Rollins appeared with At-Large City Councilor Julia Mejia online for “Woke Women Wednesdays,” hosted through WWOC Media . Mejia asked Rollins questions about the indictment against Fernandes Anderson, who represents District 7 consisting of Roxbury, Dorchester, Fenway, and part of the South End. Fernandes Anderson, who was arrested last week , is accused of orchestrating a kickback scheme involving a family member who she hired as part of her staff. She allegedly gave a large bonus to the staff member who agreed to give $7,000 back to the councilor. Rollins called into question the federal jurisdiction of the case. The bonus check involved in the scheme was made payable from a city account with Citizens Bank, a Rhode Island-based bank that processed the payment “via interstate wire communications,” federal prosecutors allege as part of their justification for a federal case. The City also received $10,000 in federal grants money in 2023, the indictment says. “Do you see what bullsh– this is? Excuse my language,” Rollins told Mejia. “This isn’t ‘Rachael Rollins was running drugs from Massachusetts to Rhode Island to New Hampshire, human trafficking people from Maine’... It seems petty.” Rollins hinted that prosecutors chose to target Fernandes Anderson with federal charges. The councilor is facing five counts of aiding and abetting wire fraud and one count of aiding and abetting theft concerning programs receiving federal funds. “I’m not saying she’s innocent, I’m not saying she’s guilty,” Rollins said, but “we can find a federal nexus for anything we want,” referring to the fine details of the allegations of Fernandes Anderson. Rollins also mentioned the 28 alleged customers of the brothel network in Boston that prosecutors have said included “wealthy and well-connected clientele” like politicians, military officers, lawyers, and tech and pharmaceutical executives. The alleged customers are facing charges in district court. “They don’t want to find a federal nexuses for people who look and live like them,” Rollins said. Rollins did not return a request for comment about her statements. Molly Farrar Molly Farrar is a general assignment reporter for Boston.com, focusing on education, politics, crime, and more. Houston Texans wide receiver Nico Collins scored a touchdown against the Tennessee Titans in his most recent home game and tossed the ball to a child in the stands pleading for it. On Thursday, Collins told reporters the NFL did not approve and assessed him a fine of about $5,000. "It's for the kids," Collins said. "I seen he was screaming and was thinking, ‘Here you go, big dog. Here's the ball.'" Collins said he was not penalized last season on the handful of occasions he threw a ball into the stands, so he wasn't expecting a fine. But making a child's day was "definitely worth it." The 25-year-old said he plans to appeal the fine, but if it isn't overturned, he'll pay up. "The only thing that matters was making that kid happy," he said. "He ain't never going to forget that moment. So that's all that matters to me." Collins followed up a 92-yard, one-touchdown performance that day against Tennessee with eight receptions for 119 yards last week at Jacksonville. The fourth-year wideout is Houston's leading receiver despite missing five games due to a hamstring injury. He has caught 49 passes for 832 yards and four touchdowns in just eight appearances. --Field Level Media

Fianna Fail and Fine Gael eye independent TDs as option to secure Dail majority

Personalisation and humanisation have emerged as the two fundamental pillars that underpin a successful customer experience (CX) strategy. As retailers strive to create memorable and engaging experiences for their customers, understanding the core elements that contribute to effective personalisation has become increasingly crucial. This is especially critical as retailers now enter into peak shopping season globally, with the likes of Black Friday and the festive season approaching. Core elements of successful personalisation Personalisation within CX begins with a deep understanding of the customer. It's essential for retailers to identify who the customer is, their preferences, and their behaviours. This foundational knowledge allows them to tailor their services and offerings to meet individual needs effectively. However, personalisation is not just about knowing the customer; it's also about ensuring consistency across all channels. This omnichannel approach means that whether a customer interacts with a website, a social media page, or a mobile app, the experience remains seamless and uniform. The digital and physical CX should mirror each other, reinforcing the brand persona and values at every touchpoint. Another critical aspect is customer support. Personalisation extends beyond product sales or brand engagement; it encompasses how customers are supported throughout their journey. Effective customer support ensures that the personalisation process is complete, providing a holistic and satisfying experience for the customer. To determine the... Staff Writer

The decision by Tesco, Musgrave and the BWG Group came after a woman who said Mr McGregor raped her won a civil claim for damages against him. Nikita Hand, who accused the sportsman of raping her in a Dublin hotel in December 2018, won her claim against him for damages in a case at the High Court in the Irish capital. In a statement, a spokesman for Musgrave said: “Musgrave can confirm these products are no longer available to our store network.” The network includes SuperValu, Centra, Daybreak and Mace. A Tesco spokesperson said: “We can confirm that we are removing Proper No Twelve Whiskey from sale in Tesco stores and online.” A spokesperson for BWG Group said: “The products are no longer listed for distribution across our network of Spar, Eurospar, Mace, Londis and XL stores, including Appleby Westward which operates over 300 Spar stores in the south west of England.” It is understood that other retail outlets including Costcutter and Carry Out will also stop stocking products linked to Mr McGregor. He and some of his business partners sold their majority stake in the Proper Number Twelve Irish whiskey brand. He was reported to have been paid more than £103 million from the sale to Proximo Spirits in 2021. On Monday, a popular video game developer decided to pull content featuring the MMA fighter. The Irish athlete has featured in multiple video games, including voice-acting a character bearing his likeness in additional downloadable content in the Hitman series. Mr McGregor’s character featured as a target for the player-controlled assassin in the game. IO Interactive, the Danish developer and publisher of Hitman, said in a statement: “In light of the recent court ruling regarding Conor McGregor, IO Interactive has made the decision to cease its collaboration with the athlete, effective immediately. “We take this matter very seriously and cannot ignore its implications. “Consequently, we will begin removing all content featuring Mr McGregor from our storefronts starting today.” Last Friday, the High Court jury awarded damages amounting to 248,603.60 euros (around £206,000) to Ms Hand. Mr McGregor made no comment as he left court but later posted on social media that he intended to appeal against the decision.

NEW YORK (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump rang the opening bell Thursday at the New York Stock Exchange after being recognized for the second time by Time magazine as its person of the year. The honors for the businessman-turned-politician are a measure of Trump’s remarkable comeback from an ostracized former president who refused to accept his election loss four years ago to a president-elect who won the White House decisively in November. Before Trump rang the opening bell at 9:30 a.m., a first for the native New Yorker, he spoke at the exchange and called it “a tremendous honor.” “Time magazine, getting this honor for the second time, I think I like it better this time actually,” he said. Trump, accompanied by his wife, Melania, daughters Ivanka and Tiffany and Vice President-elect JD Vance, grinned as people chanted “USA” before he opened the trading day. He then raised his fist. In his remarks, he promoted some of the people he has named to his incoming administration, including Treasury pick Scott Bessent, and some of his policies, including a promise that the federal government will expedite permits for projects and construction worth more than $1 billion. “I think we’re going to have a tremendous run. We have to straighten out some problems, some big problems in the world,” he said. Sam Jacobs, the magazine’s editor in chief, made the announcement on NBC’s “Today” show, saying Trump was someone who “for better or for worse, had the most influence on the news in 2024.” Trump was Time’s Person of the Year in 2016, when he was first elected to the White House. “This is someone who made an historic comeback, who reshaped the American presidency and who’s reordering American politics,” Jacobs said. The NYSE regularly invites celebrities and business leaders to participate in the bell-ringing, which has become a marker of culture and politics.

KUALA BERANG: The Federal Government has started distributing RM1,000 in Bantuan Wang Ihsan to heads of households (KIR) affected by floods nationwide since yesterday, says Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. Ahmad Zahid, who is also the National Disaster Management Committee chairman, said the aid distributed to each KIR who moved to a temporary evacuation centre (PPS) and in accordance with the conditions determined by the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) will be distributed in phases. “I hope that the distribution of assistance will be fully organised and we do not want any of the KIRs who moved to the PPS to be left out,” he told reporters after visiting the PPS at SMK Matang here yesterday, Bernama reported. Ahmad Zahid said the Federal Government has also asked state governments affected by floods to also work on providing assistance and emergency funds to KIRs or victims who have suffered major losses, such as damage to their homes and household appliances. He assured the people that the government has sufficient allocations to distribute the Bantuan Wang Ihsan to affected KIRs nationwide, which has now exceeded 30,000 KIRs. In fact, he said, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who is also the Finance Minister, will increase the amount for the cash assistance if the number of KIRs exceeds the allocation provided. In the meantime, he said, the government is building 14 Permanent Disaster Evacuation Centres (PPKB) nationwide or one PPKB in each state for the convenience of flood victims. “For Hulu Terengganu, we have received applications from local leaders (for the construction of PPKB) and we will consider it for the second phase. “I have asked district officers to identify suitable areas for the construction of this PPKB. “Allocations are already in place and the Prime Minister himself has given Nadma an overall allocation for next year’s budget of RM600mil, which is RM100mil more than this year’s allocation,” he said. Ahmad Zahid said that following a sharp increase in the number of victims, the government has ordered all enforcement and security agencies to be on standby and organise the deployment of their teams as best as possible. He said cooperation between the Federal Government and the state government regardless of political differences, such as the one that has developed now, is very important to safeguard the welfare of people who have been affected by the floods.Earlier, Ahmad Zahid spent about 30 minutes comforting flood victims at SMK Matang here, which consists of 275 victims from 130 families. In addition, the Deputy Prime Minister also spent time visiting flood victims at SK Nibong here, which houses 265 victims from 91 families.Threads’ next update is a search feature that finds the post you’re looking for - The Verge

One of Eddie Hearn 's biggest achievements as a promoter is the way he guided and built the career of Anthony Joshua . Hearn signed Joshua to the Matchroom banner back in 2013 after he won gold in the 2012 London Olympics and slowly turned a young, raw and talented boxer from Watford into one of the most feared heavyweights alive who would also go on to become one of the biggest draws in the history of the heavyweight division in boxing . Hearn, who has been on record saying that he loves developing young fighters, has another project on the go with a highly rated Olympic boxer which has the potential to be another incredible success. It was announced last week that British Olympic heavyweight prospect, Pat Brown had signed with Matchroom Boxing and was set to begin his professional boxing career in 2025 in the cruiserweight division. There are four medalists from the 2024 Olympic Games who could now take pro boxing by storm! Eddie Hearn Excited About Pat Brown's Future Following Signing With Matchroom Boxing Eddie Hearn has yet another highly-rated Olympian on his hands. Last week, it was announced that Matchroom Boxing had signed highly-rated British Olympian, Pat Brown. Brown is 25 years old and despite just having turned pro, Hearn believes the Olympian already has a following behind him which many boxers don't have. Speaking to SportsBoom.com , the Matchroom chairman had a lot of praise for Brown's ticket-selling abilities, as he has a strong presence in his community in Manchester and even compared the 25-year-old's ticket-selling ability to the likes of other high-profile British boxing stars over the years such as Ricky Hatton , Josh Warrington and Anthony Crolla . “There’s something real about this, the backing for Pat. Social media followings are great but I’ve never known a ticket seller - and I mean a real ticket seller - to be built purely on one of those. Hatton, Warrington Crolla - they were huge. That was because they knew the people who came to see them. They were out and about and people in their communities felt they knew them. Know them in fact. Things like this, what’s going on around Pat, makes me feel good. It’s a lot better than reading s**t online.” When listening to Hearn speak about his latest Matchroom project, he clearly already envisions many big fights for Brown and has even mentioned that a future unification fight at Old Trafford could potentially be on the cards. “One day we might be having a world unification fight at Old Trafford and looking back to when Pat’s pro career was launched in an old church." Despite looking forward to huge moments with Brown, Hearn pumped the breaks and spoke about wanting to build the 25-year-old up despite plans to fast-track him through the cruiserweight division. Hearn also praised Brown as a person and added that it is not just his talent as to why he is so excited to work with him, it is what he is like as a person as well. “Sometimes you meet someone and you just know. I knew all about Pat’s ability but I also discovered I really liked him as a lad too. If I’m putting money into you, then I want to invest in you as a person as well. It’s like buying a racehorse. You don’t just look at its pedigree. You also look at its character.” Now that Brown is officially signed to Matchroom, the work will now begin for his professional debut, which will take place in the cruiserweight division in 2025. It has already been confirmed that Brown will be trained by Jamie Moore and top British super-lightweight fighter, Jack Catterall .

PARIS: The French government is all but certain to collapse later this week after far-right and left-wing parties submitted no-confidence motions on Monday (Dec 2) against Prime Minister Michel Barnier . Investors immediately punished French assets as the latest developments plunged the euro zone's second-biggest economy deeper into political crisis, with serious doubt cast over whether the annual budget will be approved . "The French have had enough," National Rally (RN) leader Marine Le Pen told reporters in parliament, saying Barnier, who only became prime minister in early September, had made things worse and needed to be pushed out. "We are proposing a motion of no confidence against the government," she said. Barring a last-minute surprise, Barnier's fragile coalition will be the first French government to be forced out by a no-confidence vote since 1962. A government collapse would leave a hole at the heart of Europe, with Germany also in election mode, weeks ahead of US President-elect Donald Trump re-entering the White House. RN lawmakers and the left combined have enough votes to topple Barnier and Le Pen confirmed her party would vote for the left-wing coalition's no-confidence bill on top of the RN's own bill. That vote is likely to be held on Wednesday. The parties announced their no-confidence motions after Barnier said earlier on Monday that he would try to ram a social security bill through parliament without a vote as a last-minute concession proved insufficient to win RN's support for the legislation. "Faced with this umpteenth denial of democracy, we will censure the government," said Mathilde Panot of the left-wing France Unbowed. "We are living in political chaos because of Michel Barnier's government and Emmanuel Macron's presidency." The spread between French bonds and the German benchmark widened further and a sell-off in the euro gathered pace. Since Macron called snap elections in early June , France's CAC 40 has dropped nearly 10 per cent and is the heaviest faller among top EU economies. It closed flat on Monday after dropping over 1 per cent earlier in the day. BLAME GAME Barnier urged lawmakers not to back the no-confidence vote. "We are at a moment of truth ... The French will not forgive us for putting the interests of individuals before the future of the country," he said as he put his government's fate in the hands of the divided parliament which was the result of an inconclusive snap election Macron called in June. Barnier's minority government had relied on RN support for its survival. The budget bill, which seeks to rein in France's spiraling public deficit through 60 billion euros (US$63 billion) in tax hikes and spending cuts, snapped that tenuous link. Barnier's entourage and Le Pen's camp each blamed the other and said they had done all they could to reach a deal and had been open to dialogue. A source close to Barnier said the prime minister had made major concessions to Le Pen and that voting to bring down the government would mean losing those gains. "Is she ready to sacrifice all the wins she got?" the source told Reuters. If the no-confidence vote does indeed go through, Barnier would have to tender his resignation but Macron may ask him and his government to stay on in a caretaker role to handle day-to-day business while he seeks a new prime minister, which could well happen only next year. One option would be for Macron to name a government of technocrats with no political programme, hoping that could help survive a no-confidence vote. In any case, there can be no new snap parliamentary elections before July. As far as the budget is concerned, if parliament has not adopted it by Dec. 20, the caretaker government could invoke constitutional powers to pass it by ordinance. However, that would be risky as there is a legal grey area about whether a caretaker government can use such powers. And that would be sure to trigger uproar from the opposition. A more likely move would be for the caretaker government to propose special emergency legislation to roll over spending limits and tax provisions from this year. But that would mean that savings measures Barnier had planned would fall by the wayside.Hornets vs. Magic Injury Report Today – November 25

An ex-detective accused of abusing women died in an apparent suicide as his trial was startingKABUL (AFP): When Zainab Ferozi saw Afghan women struggling to feed their families after Taliban authorities took power, she took matters into her own hands and poured her savings into starting a business. Two-and-a-half years after putting 20,000 Afghanis ($300) earned from teaching sewing classes into a carpet weaving enterprise, she now employs around a dozen women who lost their jobs or who had to abandon their education due to Taliban government rules. Through her business in the western province of Herat, the 39-year-old also “covers all the household expenses” of her family of six, she told AFP from her office where samples of brightly coloured and exquisitely woven rugs and bags are displayed. Her husband, a labourer, cannot find work in one of the poorest countries in the world. Ferozi is one of many women who have launched small businesses in the past three years to meet their own needs and support other Afghan women, whose employment sharply declined after the Taliban took power in 2021. Before the Taliban takeover, women made up 26 percent of public sector workers, a figure that “has effectively decreased to zero”, according to UN Women. Girls and women have also been banned from secondary schools and universities under restrictions the UN has described as “gender apartheid”. Touba Zahid, a 28-year-old mother-of-one, started making jams and pickles in the small basement of her home in the capital Kabul after she was forced to stop her university education. “I came into the world of business... to create job opportunities for women so they can have an income that at least covers their immediate needs,” Zahid said. Half a dozen of her employees, wearing long white coats, were busy jarring jams and pickles labelled “Mom’s delicious homecooking”. Growing number of businesses While women may be making the stock, running the shops in Afghanistan remains mostly a man’s job. Saleswomen like Zahid “cannot go to the bazaar to promote and sell their products” themselves, said Fariba Noori, chairwoman of the Afghanistan Women’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry (AWCCI). Another issue for Afghan businesswomen is the need for a “mahram” — a male family member chaperone — to accompany them to other cities or provinces to purchase raw materials, said Noori. After 40 years of successive conflicts, many Afghan women have been widowed and lost many male relatives. Despite these challenges, the number of businesses registered with AWCCI has increased since the Taliban takeover, according to Noori. The number went “from 600 big companies to 10,000” mainly small, home-based businesses and a few bigger companies, said Noori, herself a businesswoman for 12 years. “I am proud of every woman who is giving a hand to another woman to help her become independent,” said the 26-year-old. Though businesses like Mohammadi’s are a lifeline, the salaries ranging from 5,000 to 13,000 Afghanis, cannot cover all costs and many women are still stalked by economic hardship. Qamar Qasimi, who lost her job as a beautician after the Taliban authorities banned beauty salons in 2023, said that even with her salary she and her husband struggle to pay rent and feed their family of eight. “When I worked in the beauty salon, we could earn 3,000-7,000 Afghanis for styling one bride, but here we get 5,000 per month,” said the 24-year-old. “It’s not comparable but I have no other choice,” she added, the room around her full of women chatting as they worked at 30 looms. Women-only spaces The closure of beauty salons was not only a financial blow, but also removed key spaces for women to socialise. Zohra Gonish decided to open a restaurant to create a women-only space in northeastern Badakhshan province. “Women can come here and relax,” said the 20-year-old entrepreneur. “We wanted the staff to be women so that the women customers can feel comfortable here.” But starting her business in 2022, aged 18 was not easy in a country where the labour force participation for women is 10 times lower than the world average, according to the World Bank. It took Gonish a week to convince her father to support her. Aside from helping their families and having space to socialise, some women said work has given them a sense of purpose. Sumaya Ahmadi, 15, joined Ferozi’s carpet company to help her parents after she had to leave school and became “very depressed”. “(Now) I’m very happy and I no longer have any mental health problems. I’m happier and I feel better.” The work has also given her a new goal: to help her two brothers build their futures. “Because schools’ doors are closed to girls, I work instead of my brothers so they can study and do something with their lives.”

Australia's government has shortlisted the StrikeMaster - a hybrid Bushmaster truck with a missile launcher - to arm a second "long-range fires regiment". It is part of a national pivot to long range missiles worth as much as $35 billion in the next decade, as Australia attempts to shore up security and project power into the Pacific and Indian oceans. Manufacturers Thales Australia and Kongsberg Defence Australia have pitched StrikeMasters assembled at a factory in North Bendigo. They have built prototypes using Kongsberg's fifth generation Naval Strike Missiles designed to hit ships hundreds of kilometres away. The missiles would be fired from the flatbed of a Bushmaster. Manufacturers would replace the truck's armoured hull - used for carrying troops - with the missile launcher, making it into a StrikeMaster. StrikeMasters are up against a proven competitor. The government could go with overseas-built High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) launcher vehicles. American-based company Lockheed Martin describes HIMARS as "the most technically advanced, affordable and sustainable artillery solution". Nigel Slater’s recipes for creamy lentils and haricot bean soupThe Pittsburgh Steelers ' 44-38 win over the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 13 was much needed. With the victory, the Steelers improved to 9-3, and thanks to the Baltimore Ravens' loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, Pittsburgh gained another crucial game in the division. This win was vital as the Steelers continue to push toward the playoffs, keeping their momentum strong in the tight AFC North race. The Steelers have had an exciting season, but star wide receiver George Pickens has certainly made headlines for both the right and wrong reasons. Pickens' on-field antics have caught attention, with some moments standing out for their flair and others for their controversy. In the win over the Bengals, Pickens caught a deep ball from Russell Wilson and pointed for a first down, but the referees misinterpreted the gesture , flagging him 15 yards for unsportsmanlike conduct, thinking he was mimicking the action of shooting a gun. Earlier in the game, Pickens also tossed the ball at a Bengals player after a catch, leading to another 15-yard penalty for taunting. As the game unfolded, former Steelers stars Ben Roethlisberger and James Harrison were live-streaming the action and shared their frustration over Pickens' antics. Both were vocal about their displeasure with the penalties, especially considering the team's focus on staying disciplined during such a critical stretch of the season. "I mean I feel like this is every week with him," Roethlisberger said. "There’s something. He is so good and he helps you so much, but this is not helping the team. He’s ok with it, but I am not ok with it." Roethlisberger acknowledged that while Pickens possesses incredible talent, there's always an underlying tension, as they’re constantly on edge, wondering what he might do after a big play. Harrison chimed in, offering his perspective on the situation, sharing his thoughts on how he views Pickens' taunting and its impact on the team. "I’m not ok with it because you can celebrate with your team," Harrison said. "They seen what you did, they know what you did. Turn to your teammates you can say everything you wanna say this way and they will hear it." Harrison stated that it’s not his responsibility to handle Pickens' behavior, leaving that to the offensive players. Roethlisberger, on the other hand, discussed the challenges of managing a star like Pickens—someone with an intense competitive drive—while trying to keep him in control. "The hard part is like in the moment you wanna say something, but you don’t have time, so you gotta do it on the sideline," Roethlisberger said. "If the player can’t handle it, then you gotta wait until after the game." Wilson spoke out once again in support of Pickens, emphasizing that he made a point to stay in communication with him throughout the game to help keep his focus. Despite the distractions, Pickens delivered in a big way, scoring a touchdown, catching three passes for 74 yards, and playing a key role in opening up the offense. Steelers' George Pickens Called Out By Mike Tomlin To "Grow Up In A Hurry" The issue, however, is that Pickens often seems to prioritize his individual celebrations over the team’s success, putting himself at risk of penalties. After his touchdown, he punted the football into the stands, an act that only added to the growing concerns. George Pickens punts the ball after scoring a touchdown, he will receive a fine for that tomorrow morning... pic.twitter.com/5bqfhcR434 For the Steelers, this constant worry over Pickens’ behavior raises questions about his future in Pittsburgh, especially if he doesn't mature. Many believe his potential second contract with the team could be in jeopardy if these issues persist. Fans have debated on social media whether Pickens should have been flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct after signaling for a first down. While that call is open for discussion, there’s little room to argue against the taunting penalty. Pickens needs to learn quickly and mature if he hopes to secure a long-term future with the Steelers. This article first appeared on SteelerNation.com and was syndicated with permission.

DEAR ERIC: I eat at a local restaurant a couple times a week and tend to get one of three meals. This one waitress asks me what I want to eat, but then interrupts me to make guesses or tell me my choice. I just put my head down and nod yes or no to the guesses. It’s frustrating, but not life-threatening. She enjoys it. I hate it. However, if I were to say something, it would force her to make the choice of being herself, doing something she likes doing, or appeasing me so I can order the way I want to order. I don’t know if this is a big enough problem to have a “high road.” The answer will not change my life. She can easily change, and I can easily suffer. The question is who gets to be themselves? – Speaking Up DEAR SPEAKING UP: I worked in the service industry for more than a decade. I loved it. I loved seeing regulars, meeting new people and carrying a lot of beverages in my hands at one time. The whole bit. I also loved knowing what people wanted, but I would always ask and confirm. That’s part of the job. She may think you’re a regular who likes to be known in this way. So, informing her that that’s not the case won’t be keeping her from being herself. It will be helping her to do her job better. You may not have the kind of temperament that easily or comfortably course-corrects in social situations. That’s just fine. But know you won’t be causing her suffering by saying something like “I’ve already decided on my meal. Let’s skip the guessing today and I’ll just tell you.” This also clears the path for the two of you to talk about something else, if you want. Ideally, it’s a conversation that you’ll both enjoy. Chance of success at COP29 'iffy': EU climate chief EU offers to raise rich countries' climate pledge to $300b No climate deal better than 'bad' one: NGOs The world's most climate-imperilled nations stormed out of consultations in protest at the deadlocked UN COP29 conference yesterday, as simmering tensions over a hard-fought finance deal erupted into the open. Diplomats from small island nations threatened by rising seas and impoverished African states angrily walked out of a meeting with summit hosts Azerbaijan over a final deal being thrashed out in a Baku sports stadium. "We came here to this COP for a fair deal. We feel that we haven't been heard," said Cedric Schuster, the Samoan chairman of the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS). An unpublished version of the final text circulating in Baku, and seen by AFP, proposes that rich nations raise to $300 billion a year by 2035 their commitment to poorer countries to fight climate change. It is up from $100 billion now provided by wealthy nations under a commitment set to expire. COP29 hosts Azerbaijan intended to put a final draft before 198 nations for adoption or rejection on Saturday evening, a full day after the marathon summit officially ended. Sierra Leone's climate minister Jiwoh Abdulai, whose country is among the world's poorest, said the draft was "effectively a suicide pact for the rest of the world". In a statement, Schuster said AOSIS and the group of Least Developed Countries (LDCs) have found themselves "continuously insulted by the lack of inclusion" at COP29. Schuster said that without an inclusive process, "it becomes very difficult for us to continue our involvement here at COP29". But negotiators from AOSIS, the LDCs and wealthy nations met later with the COP29 presidency. "We're doing our utmost to build bridges with literally everyone," EU climate commissioner Wopke Hoekstra said in a statement. "It is not easy," he said. "There is no alternative to do whatever we can." An earlier offer from rich nations of $250 billion was slammed as offensively low by developing countries, which have demanded much higher sums to build resilience against climate change and cut emissions. UK Energy Secretary Ed Miliband said the revised offer of $300 billion was "a significant scaling up" of the existing pledge by developed nations, which also count the United States, EU and Japan among their ranks. Harried diplomats ran to-and-fro in the stadium near the Caspian Sea searching for common ground. "Hopefully this is the storm before the calm," said US climate envoy John Podesta in the corridors as somebody shouted "shame" in his direction. Panama's negotiator, Juan Carlos Monterrey Gomez, said delegates could not go home without a deal and repeat the failure of COP15 in Copenhagen in 2009. "I'm sad, I'm tired, I'm disheartened, I'm hungry, I'm sleep-deprived, but there is a tiny ray of optimism within me because this cannot become a new Copenhagen," he told reporters. Wealthy nations say it is politically unrealistic to expect more in direct government funding. Donald Trump, a sceptic of both climate change and foreign assistance, returns to the White House in January and a number of other Western countries have seen right-wing backlashes against the green agenda. The draft deal posits a larger overall target of $1.3 trillion per year to cope with rising temperatures and disasters, but most would come from private sources. Ali Mohamed, the Kenyan chair of the African Group of Negotiators, told AFP: "No deal is better than a bad deal." South African environment minister Dion George, however, said: "I think being ambitious at this point is not going to be very useful." "What we are not up for is going backwards or standing still," he said. "We might as well just have stayed at home then." A coalition of more than 300 activist groups accused historic polluters most responsible for climate change of skirting their obligation and urged developing nations to stand firm. A group of developing countries had demanded at least $500 billion, with some saying that increases were less than met the eye due to inflation. Experts commissioned by the United Nations to assess the needs of developing countries said $250 billion was "too low" and by 2035 rich nations should be providing at least $390 billion. The US and EU have wanted newly wealthy emerging economies like China -- the world's largest emitter -- to chip in. China, which remains classified as a developing nation under the UN framework, provides climate assistance but wants to keep doing so on its own voluntary terms. The EU and other countries have also tussled with Saudi Arabia over including strong language on moving away from fossil fuels, which negotiators say the oil-producing country has resisted. "We will not allow the most vulnerable, especially the small island states, to be ripped off by the new, few rich fossil fuel emitters," said German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock.

"Antonio was shot in the mouth, and the bullet went through the back of his head," his uncle, Manuel Samuel, told the BBC. "We saw CCTV footage from nearby shops of police shooting at protesters," he added. Antonio Juaqim's killing is a tragic reminder of the volatile political climate in the southern African state since Frelimo - the former liberation movement in power since independence 49 years ago - was declared the winner of the poll. The electoral commission said Frelimo's presidential candidate, Daniel Chapo, won with a whopping 71% of the vote, compared to the 20% of his closest rival, Venâncio Mondlane. An evangelical pastor who contested the presidency as an independent after breaking away from the main opposition Renamo party, Mondlane rejected the declaration, alleging the poll was rigged. This was denied by the electoral commission, but Mondlane - who fled the country, fearing arrest - has rallied his supporters via social media to protest against the result. Every night at 21:00 local time (19:00 GMT), people have been banging pots and pans in their homes, as they heed Mondlane's call to send a loud message that they reject an extension of Frelimo's 49-year rule. Supporters of Venâncio Mondlane want a change of government Mr Samuel said the protest was first held on the night of 15 November when huge numbers of people took to the streets to bang pots, pans and bottles or to blow whistles.... lucky calico net login Syrians poured into streets in celebration on Sunday after a stunning rebel advance reached the capital, ending the Assad family’s 50 years of iron rule . Russian state news agencies were reporting that President Bashar Assad and his family had arrived in Moscow and were given asylum. Russia said Assad left the country after negotiations with rebel groups and that he had given instructions to transfer power peacefully. Joyful crowds gathered in central squares in Damascus, waving the Syrian revolutionary flag. Others ransacked the presidential palace and residence. Abu Mohammed al-Golani , a former al-Qaida commander who cut ties with the group years ago leads the biggest rebel faction in Syria and is poised to chart the country’s future. He made his first public appearance since fighters entered the Damascus suburbs Saturday, at the capital’s sprawling Umayyad Mosque, and called himself by his given name, Ahmad al-Sharaa. He said Assad’s fall was “a victory to the Islamic nation.” The rapidly developing events have shaken the region. Lebanon said it was closing all its land border crossings with Syria except for one that links Beirut with Damascus. Jordan closed a border crossing with Syria, too. Israel has issued warnings to villages in southern Syria and its forces seized a buffer zone in the Golan Heights. Here's the Latest: Russian state news agencies reported that ousted Syrian President Bashar Assad has arrived in Moscow with his family and been given asylum. The agencies, Tass and RIA, cited an unidentified Kremlin source. The Associated Press was not immediately able to verify the reports but had contacted the Kremlin for comment. CAIRO — The Arab League on Sunday condemned Israel for taking advantage of Syrian President Bashar Assad's downfall by moving into more Syrian territory. Hours after Assad’s overthrow, Israel announced it had seized a buffer zone in the Golan Heights that was established by a cease-fire agreement with Syria in 1974. In a statement, the Arab League said Israel illegally sought to occupy more territories. But Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the 50-year-old agreement regarding Syrian territory had collapsed and that Syrian troops had abandoned their positions, necessitating Israel taking over as a “temporary defensive position.” UNITED NATIONS — The United Nations secretary-general is marking the “fall of the dictatorial regime” in Syria and says the future of the country is “is a matter for the Syrians to determine.” A statement by Antonio Guterres also called for calm and the protection of the rights of all Syrians as well as of diplomatic and consular facilities in Syria. He said there is much work ahead to ensure an “orderly political transition to renewed institutions,” and he called on the international community to ensure that “any political transition is inclusive and comprehensive and that it meets the legitimate aspirations of the people of Syria, in all their diversity.” KYIV, Ukraine - Ukraine’s top diplomat on Sunday responded to Assad’s ouster by describing him as a “dictator” who relied on Russia to prop up his rule - a reference to the military campaign Moscow has waged in Syria since September 2015, teaming up with Iran to allow Assad’s government to fight armed opposition groups and reclaim control over most of the country. "Assad has fallen. This has always been and will be the case with all dictators who bet on Putin. He always betrays those who rely on him,” foreign minister Andrii Sybiha said in a post on X. In a separate update on the social network, Sybiha said Kyiv was ready to take steps towards restoring relations with Syria, severed months into Russia’s full-scale invasion of the neighboring state. Kyiv broke off diplomatic ties after Damascus in June 2022 recognized Kremlin-occupied parts of eastern Ukraine as independent territories, in a move welcomed by Moscow and decried by the West as a clear violation of Ukrainian sovereignty. JERUSALEM — The Israeli military has issued a warning to residents of five villages and towns in southern Syria to stay inside their homes for their safety. “The fighting in your area is forcing the IDF to act,” the IDF’s Arabic-language spokesman said on X. The military didn’t respond to questions. Earlier, Israel said its troops had seized a buffer zone in the Golan Heights established in 1974, saying it was to protect Israeli residents after Syrian troops abandoned their positions. Defense Minister Israel Katz said on X that the IDF has been instructed to “seize the buffer zone and control points to ensure the protection of all Israeli communities in the Golan Heights – Jewish and Druze – so that they are not exposed to threats from the other side.” Israel captured the Golan in the 1967 Mideast war and later annexed it. The international community, except for the United States, views it as occupied. BEIRUT - The leader of the largest insurgent group in Syria visited the Syrian capital’s sprawling Umayyad Mosque and declared that the victory against President Bashar Assad “is a victory to the Islamic nation.” Ahmad al-Sharaa, who was formerly known as Abu Mohammed al-Golani, made his first public appearance and remarks since fighters entered Damascus. He told hundreds of people at the historic mosque that Assad had made Syria “a farm for Iran’s greed.” He added that Assad made Syria a base for the illegal amphetamine Captagon that brought cash to Assad’s circles. Al-Sharaa, the leader of the jihadi Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, or HTS, said Sunday that the victory was achieved because of “God and the blood of martyrs.” He said that he left Syria 20 years ago and since then his heart has longed for this movement. LONDON — British Prime Minister Keir Starmer welcomed the end of Assad’s rule as he called for peace and the protection of civilians. “The Syrian people have suffered under Assad’s barbaric regime for too long and we welcome his departure,” Starmer said. He said the U.K. was focused on a political solution to restore peace and stability. “We call on all sides to protect civilians and minorities and ensure essential aid can reach the most vulnerable in the coming hours and days,” he said. AMMAN, Jordan — The vast majority of the Jordanian people are welcoming the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime and the success of the Syrian revolution. “There is no doubt that I felt overwhelming joy at the fall of the Assad regime," said Badi Al-Rafaia, Engineer, union activist and member of the Islamic Action Front. "There is no doubt that we are happy with what happened in Syria, happy with the success of the revolution, happy with the Syrian people getting rid of an oppressor and criminal who treated the Syrian people and made the Syrian state a failed state.” Al-Rafaia said that Jordan is benefiting from what happened in Syria, and "we hope that Jordan will help the revolution succeed and not work against it.” Amman resident Muhab al-Majali said the fall of the Assad regime is “The end of every unjust and tyrannical rule, and more than that, it mortgaged the country and its people to the Iranians, who abandoned it in minutes... I believe that the future is beautiful and prosperous for the Syrians.” BERLIN — The International Committee of the Red Cross is calling for safe humanitarian access and protection of civilians in Syria after the fall of Bashir Assad’s government. “Our teams in Syria, including in Damascus, have been closely monitoring the fast-evolving security and humanitarian situation in coordination with the Syrian Arab Red Crescent,” the ICRC’s head of delegation in Syria, Stephan Sakalian, said in a written statement Sunday. The ICRC is “responding wherever possible, with further efforts underway, as hundreds of thousands of people need care and humanitarian assistance,” he said. Sakalian called “on all parties to urgently enable safe and unhindered access for medical and humanitarian workers to reach those in need, to protect civilians, and to uphold their obligations under international humanitarian law.” BAGHDAD — The Iraqi government said in a statement Sunday that it “supports all international and regional efforts seeking to open a dialogue” for Syria “leading to the adoption of a pluralistic constitution that preserves the human and civil rights of Syrians, and supports cultural, ethnic and religious diversity.” The statement from government spokesperson Bassem al-Awadi, said that Iraq understands “the necessity of respecting the free will of all Syrians, and stresses that the security of Syria, the unity of its territories, and the preservation of its independence are of utmost importance, not only for Iraq but also for its connection to the security and stability of the region.” It cautioned against “interfering in Syria’s internal affairs, or supporting one party for the benefit of another.” Iraq, which has a close relationship with Iran - once a strong ally of former Syrian President Bashar Assad - has taken in some 2,000 Syrian army soldiers who fled the country amid the advance of armed opposition groups. CAIRO — The head of Yemen’s internationally recognized government welcomed the fall of the government of President Bashar Assad of Syria. “It’s a historic moment,” Rashad al-Alimi, who chairs the ruling presidential council, wrote on X platform of Assad’s downfall. “It’s time for the Iranian regime to stop meddling in Yemen, respect its sovereignty and identity.” Al-Alimi, who is backed by Saudi Arabia, was referring to Iran’s support of Houthi rebels who are at war with Yemen’s internationally recognized government for a decade. DAMASCUS — Families wandered through the high-ceilinged halls of the presidential palace in Damascus on Sunday, along with some armed men. Some paused to take family portraits or selfies on the few remaining couches against the backdrop of mosaiced walls, while others walked out with chairs and other items under their arms. On the massive parking lot out front, cars drove in circles honking ecstatically. In central Damascus’ Umayyad Square, drivers passing by also honked jubilantly, while young men piled onto a tank abandoned in the square. But for some the celebration was bittersweet. “I am very happy, but this happiness will not be completed until I can see my son out of the prison and know where is he is,” said Damascus resident Bassam Masr. “I have been searching for him for two hours - he has been detained for 13 years.” TEHRAN, Iran — Iran says the Syrian people should decide their country’s future “without destructive, coercive foreign intervention.” The Foreign Ministry statement issued Sunday marked Iran’s first official reaction to the overthrow of President Bashar Assad, who it had strongly backed through nearly 14 years of civil war. Assad’s government was a close ally of Iran that served as a crucial conduit between it and Lebanon’s Hezbollah. The rebels who toppled Assad view Iran as a hostile foreign influence, and the abandoned Iranian Embassy in Damascus was ransacked as they entered the city. The Foreign Ministry statement said Iran supports Syria’s unity and national sovereignty, and hopes to see “the end of military conflicts, the prevention of terrorist activities and the start of a national dialogue” with the participation of all groups. “It is expected that the wise and farsighted relations of the two nations will continue based on mutual ties and interests,” the statement said. TEL AVIV, Israel – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday that Israeli forces have seized a buffer zone in the Golan Heights established by a 1974 ceasefire agreement with Syria. He spoke from an overlook near the border between Syria and the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights, after Syrian rebels tore through the country and dramatically ended Assad’s rule on Sunday morning. Netanyahu said the 50-year-old agreement had collapsed and that Syrian troops had abandoned their positions, necessitating the Israeli takeover as a “temporary defensive position.” Israel captured the Golan Heights in the 1967 Mideast war and annexed it. The international community, except for the United States, views it as occupied Syrian territory. Satellite images analyzed by the Associated Press show that as early as September, Israel began construction of what could possibly be a new road right along the so-called Alpha Line that separates the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights from Syria . The United Nations confirmed that Israeli troops entered the demilitarized zone during the work. The United Nations maintains a peacekeeping force in the demilitarized zone called the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force, or UNDOF, with around 1,100 peacekeepers from Fiji, India, Kazakhstan, Nepal, and Uruguay. After the 1973 Mideast war, the U.N. Secretary Council voted to create UNDOF to patrol a roughly 400 square kilometer (155 square mile) demilitarized zone and maintain the peace there. MASNAA, Lebanon — At Lebanon’s Masnaa crossing into Syria, the mood was festive Sunday with some local Lebanese residents handing out congratulatory sweets to Syrians lined up to return to their country. Sami Abdel-Latif, a refugee from Hama who was heading to Syria to join his wife and four children, said while the future in Syria is still uncertain, “anything is better than Bashar.” He said he expected some chaos initially but that eventually the situation would settle down. “Look at Aleppo now,” he said, referring to the first major city taken over by opposition forces more than a week ago, where life has continued more or less as normal. Abdel-Latif, a construction worker, said he is also hoping that there will now be plentiful work in Syria to rebuild. Malak Matar, who was preparing to return to Damascus, said, “This is a feeling we’ve been waiting 14 years for. “You feel yourself psychologically free - you can express yourself,” he said. “The country is free and the barriers have been broken down.” Now, he said, “Syrians have to create a state that is well-organized and take care of their country. It’s a new phase.” DAMASCUS, Syria — An Associated Press journalist in Damascus reported airstrikes in the area of the Mezzeh military airport, southwest of the capital Sunday. The airport has previously been targeted in Israeli airstrikes, but it was not immediately clear who launched Sunday's strike. The Israeli military refused to comment on the airport strike. Israel often does not publicly claim responsibility for attacks in Syria. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based war monitor, reported that Israeli warplanes also targeted warehouses belonging to the Syrian army’s Fourth Division and another former military site outside of Damascus Sunday. On Saturday and Sunday, the Israeli military sent additional troops to the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights to bolster Israel’s presence along the border between Israel and Syria. Agricultural areas along the border were declared closed military zones and some schools shifted to online classes in anticipation of unrest. MOSCOW — Russia’s Foreign Ministry claimed Sunday that Bashar Assad had left Syria after negotiations with rebel groups, and gave “instructions” to “transfer power peacefully.” In a post on the Telegram messaging app on Sunday, the ministry said Moscow had not directly participated in these talks. It also said it has been following the “dramatic events” in Syria “with extreme concern." It also said Russian troops stationed in Syria have been put on high alert and that as of early afternoon Sunday, there was “no serious threat” to the security of Russia’s military bases there. Russia has waged a military campaign in Syria since September 2015, teaming up with Iran to allow Assad’s government to fight armed opposition groups and reclaim control over most of the country. While Russia now concentrates the bulk of its military resources in Ukraine, it has maintained a military foothold in Syria and keeps troops at its bases there.Donald Trump weighed in Saturday in a bitter debate dividing his traditional supporters and tech barrons like Elon Musk, saying that he backs a special visa program that helps highly skilled workers enter the country. "I've always liked the (H1-B) visas, I have always been in favor of the visas, that's why we have them" at Trump-owned facilities, the president-elect told the New York Post in his first public comments on the matter since it flared up this week. An angry back-and-forth, largely between Silicon Valley's Musk and traditional anti-immigration Trump backers, has erupted in fiery fashion, with Musk even vowing to "go to war" over the issue. Trump's insistent calls for sharp curbs on immigration were central to his election victory in November over President Joe Biden. He has vowed to deport all undocumented immigrants and limit legal immigration. But tech entrepreneurs like Tesla's Musk -- as well as Vivek Ramaswamy, who with Musk is to co-chair a government cost-cutting panel under Trump -- say the United States produces too few highly skilled graduates, and they fervently champion the H1-B program. Musk, who himself migrated from South Africa on an H1-B, posted Thursday on his X platform that luring elite engineering talent from abroad was "essential for America to keep winning." Adding acrimony to the debate was a post from Ramaswamy, the son of immigrants from India, who deplored an "American culture" that he said venerates mediocrity, adding that the United States risks having "our asses handed to us by China." That angered several prominent conservatives who were backing Trump long before Musk noisily joined their cause this year, going on to pump more than $250 million into the Republican's campaign. "Looking forward to the inevitable divorce between President Trump and Big Tech," said Laura Loomer, a far-right MAGA figure known for her conspiracy theories, who often flew with Trump on his campaign plane. "We have to protect President Trump from the technocrats." She and others said Trump should be promoting American workers and further limiting immigration. Musk, who had already infuriated some Republicans after leading an online campaign that helped tank a bipartisan budget deal last week, fired back at his critics. Posting on X, the social media site he owns, he warned of a "MAGA civil war." Musk bluntly swore at one critic, adding that "I will go to war on this issue." That, in turn, drew a volley from Trump strategist Steve Bannon, who wrote on the Gettr platform that the H1-B program brings in migrants who are essentially "indentured servants" working for less than American citizens would. In a striking jab at Trump's close friend Musk, Bannon called the Tesla CEO a "toddler." Some of Trump's original backers say they fear he is falling under the sway of big donors from the tech world like Musk and drifting away from his campaign promises. It was not immediately clear whether Trump's remarks might soothe the intraparty strife, which has exposed just how contentious changing the immigration system might be once he takes office in January. bbk/nro

AdvertisementShare Tweet Share Share Email The cryptocurrency market is bustling with opportunities, as innovation and adoption continue to reshape how we interact with money, technology, and decentralised systems. With 2024 drawing to a close, investors are actively seeking the Best Altcoins for Exponential Returns —projects poised to deliver massive gains. The potential to transform modest investments into substantial returns makes this an exciting time to explore the right altcoins. Among the frontrunners is Qubetics ($TICS) , a groundbreaking blockchain project offering real-world solutions to problems that traditional systems haven’t been able to crack. Joining Qubetics are heavyweights like Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, and Cardano—each with its unique strengths and untapped potential. Let’s dive deep into what makes these cryptocurrencies stand out and why they could be the catalysts for exponential growth. 1. Qubetics ($TICS): Pioneering the Future of Decentralisation Qubetics has become a hot topic among crypto enthusiasts, and its presale success is a testament to its growing popularity. Now in its 14th stage, the presale has raised an impressive $8 million, with over 376 million tokens sold to more than 12,200 holders. At $0.0377 per token, this is an attractive entry point before the price increases by 10% in the next stage. Analysts have projected the token could soar to $10–$15 following its mainnet launch, positioning it as one of the Best Altcoins for Exponential Returns. Qubetics isn’t just about hype—it’s about delivering impactful solutions. With its decentralised architecture, the platform offers applications that go beyond speculation, catering to individuals, professionals, and businesses. Real-World Applications: Decentralised VPN One of Qubetics’ standout features is its decentralised VPN (Virtual Private Network), which addresses pressing issues of censorship, data privacy, and security. Unlike traditional VPNs that rely on centralised servers vulnerable to breaches, Qubetics leverages blockchain to provide a more secure and decentralised experience. Imagine a journalist in Belarus bypassing internet restrictions to access vital information securely. Or consider a small business in Uzbekistan that needs to protect its sensitive communications while collaborating with international partners. For professionals managing cross-border operations, the Qubetics VPN offers a cost-effective way to ensure data integrity and confidentiality. This application isn’t just theoretical; it’s a tool with practical value, offering peace of mind to users who demand privacy without sacrificing performance. Qubetics delivers unparalleled value through its technology, real-world utility, and massive potential for price growth. With its presale success and visionary roadmap, $TICS is undeniably one of the Best Altcoins for Exponential Returns. 2. Bitcoin (BTC): The Pioneer of Digital Assets Bitcoin remains the cornerstone of the cryptocurrency market, with a track record of weathering volatility and delivering consistent returns. As the first and most recognised cryptocurrency, Bitcoin has seen renewed interest thanks to institutional adoption, the approval of spot ETFs, and its upcoming halving event in 2024. The halving, which reduces the reward for mining Bitcoin by half, historically triggers bull markets by reducing supply and increasing demand. As these dynamics play out, Bitcoin is poised to see significant price appreciation, reaffirming its position as digital gold. Bitcoin’s proven resilience, institutional backing, and predictable scarcity make it a must-have asset for exponential returns. 3. Ethereum (ETH): The Backbone of Decentralised Finance Ethereum continues to dominate the DeFi (decentralised finance) and NFT (non-fungible token) markets, solidifying its status as the second-largest cryptocurrency. Its transition to Ethereum 2.0 introduced a proof-of-stake mechanism, reducing energy consumption and enhancing scalability. Layer-2 solutions like Optimism and zkSync have further improved Ethereum’s transaction speeds and affordability, attracting developers and users alike. Whether it’s powering smart contracts or hosting billion-dollar DeFi protocols, Ethereum remains indispensable. Ethereum’s unmatched ecosystem, continuous innovation, and relevance in DeFi and NFTs make it one of the Best Altcoins for Exponential Returns. 4. Solana (SOL): The Scalability Powerhouse Solana has carved a niche as one of the fastest and most scalable blockchains, making it a favourite among developers building DeFi apps and NFTs. Its unique proof-of-history mechanism allows it to process thousands of transactions per second at minimal cost. Recent partnerships in gaming and entertainment sectors have further boosted Solana’s adoption, while its robust ecosystem continues to attract top-tier projects. Solana’s unmatched speed, low costs, and growing ecosystem make it a prime candidate for short- and long-term growth. 5. Cardano (ADA): The Sustainable Innovator Cardano’s commitment to sustainability and scalability sets it apart from other blockchains. Its methodical approach to development, including peer-reviewed research and upgrades like Hydra, ensures it remains at the cutting edge. Cardano has also focused on real-world applications, partnering with governments and organisations to implement blockchain solutions in education, healthcare, and supply chain management. Cardano’s innovative technology, commitment to sustainability, and growing adoption make it one of the Best Altcoins for Exponential Returns . Conclusion Based on our research and analysis, these five altcoins represent the cream of the crop for exponential returns in the crypto market. From Qubetics’ revolutionary decentralised VPN to Bitcoin’s resilience and Ethereum’s DeFi dominance, each project offers unique opportunities for growth and innovation. The potential to transform modest investments into substantial gains lies in identifying projects with strong fundamentals, real-world applications, and solid community backing. These altcoins have demonstrated the capacity to reshape industries, solve pressing problems, and reward their investors handsomely. The future of digital assets is unfolding now—position yourself wisely to take full advantage. SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California, home to some of the largest technology companies in the world, would be the first U.S. state to require mental health warning labels on social media sites if lawmakers pass a bill introduced Monday. The legislation sponsored by state Attorney General Rob Bonta is necessary to bolster safety for children online, supporters say, but industry officials vow to fight the measure and others like it under the First Amendment. Warning labels for social media gained swift bipartisan support from dozens of attorneys general, including Bonta, after U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy called on Congress to establish the requirements earlier this year, saying social media is a contributing factor in the mental health crisis among young people.

Viewers think the I'm A Celebrity 2024 winner is already set, as they discussed their votes hours before the final. Fans of the ITV series predicted who would win the jungle show hosted by Ant McPartlin and Dec Donnelly. Coleen Rooney , Danny Jones and Reverend Richard Coles are the three finalists , after Oti Mabuse left the jungle on Saturday night. On Sunday night one of them will be crowned the new King or Queen of the Jungle, taking 2023 winner Sam Thompson's victory. The trio will be rejoined by the former campmates who didn't make the final, while Tulisa Contostavlos will not appear. Now, with just hours to go, some viewers believe the winner is "obvious" and that one star "must win". Despite voting not yet closed and the announcement not being made until this evening, fans think that one campmate will definitely be crowned the champion. Coleen is tipped to win the series, amid her husband Wayne Rooney and their kids sharing their support. With Wayne hoping his wife brings home the crown , viewers do too with many fans of the show believing she will be the person declared victorious on Sunday evening. Taking to social media, one viewer said: "Coleen has to win," as another wrote: "Coleen has won." A third fan posted on X: "I voted for Coleen to win the whole competition. We ladies have to stick together." A fourth fan posted online: "Coleen must win. She has to," as another said: "Coleen to take the win." A further comment read: "Coleen should win," while one viewer theorised: "Absolutely rigged for Coleen to win." Hosts Ant and Dec had already addressed fix claims just days ago, after former star GK Barry made a comment in her exit chat. When the presenters asked her who she thought would win, she shared her hopes that Richard would be the champion - while she also said she'd be happy if Coleen won. But when she spoke about Richard being the potential winner, she suggested that if this did not happen then the show and the vote was "fixed". Ant and Dec were quick to react with Ant calling this idea out. Ant screamed out: "No... how would it be a fix? People vote," as he pointed to the cameras. GK claimed that for her pal not to win would suggest the voting was fixed, while the conversation soon moved on. I'm A Celebrity... Rackham "But I must explain to you how all this mistaken idea of denouncing pleasure and praising pain was born and I will give you a complete account of the system, and expound the actual teachings of the great explorer of the truth, the master-builder of human happiness. No one rejects, dislikes, or avoids pleasure itself, because it is pleasure, but because those who do not know how to pursue pleasure rationally encounter consequences that are extremely painful. Nor again is there anyone who loves or pursues or desires to obtain pain of itself, because it is pain, but because occasionally circumstances occur in which toil and pain can procure him some great pleasure. To take a trivial example, which of us ever undertakes laborious physical exercise, except to obtain some advantage from it? But who has any right to find fault with a man who chooses to enjoy a pleasure that has no annoying consequences, or one who avoids a pain that produces no resultant pleasure?" 1914 translation by H.
